COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 21, 2013) – The women’s beach team of Kelly Schumacher and Summer Ross was the only U.S. team to advance to the main draw at the FIVB Moscow Grand Slam on Wednesday in Russia.
Schumacher and Ross, seeded No. 9 in the qualifying bracket, had a bye in the first round and swept Chile’s Maria Francisca Rivas Zapata and Camila Pazdirek Peteri , 21-11, 21-11 in the final round.Schumacher and Ross begin main draw play on Thursday. Finals for both genders are scheduled for Sunday.
Among other U.S. competitors, No. 17 seeds Heather Hughes and Lane Carico started hot in the first round, defeating Czech Republic’s Karolina Rehackova and Michala Kvapilova, 21-14, 21-15. Germany’s No. 2 seeded Victoria Bieneck and Julia Grobner outlasted the Americans, 21-13, 17-21, 15-12 in the final round.
On the men’s side, No. 22 seeded Will Montgomery and Avery Drost, fell to France’s No. 11 Andy Ces and Edouard Rowlandson, 21-16, 21-16 in the first qualification round.
