COLORADO SPRINGS (Aug. 16, 2013) – USA Volleyball announced today that Chicago will serve as the qualifier for the Girls’ Junior National Championships, beginning in 2015.
Approximately 100,000 girls, ages 12-18, compete in Junior National Qualifiers nationwide each year. The Great Lakes Region submitted the accepted bid and services 125 volleyball clubs in Illinois.
“The upper Midwest has been a long-time hotbed for junior volleyball in the country,” said Tom Pingel, USA Volleyball’s Senior Director, Indoor Events and High Performance.
“The Great Lakes Region -- and the city of Chicago – is in the heart of this area and believe that the addition of Chicago as the 12th National Qualifier will complement the existing 11 Qualifiers in servicing the junior volleyball community in the Girls’ Junior National Championship (GJNC) qualification process.”
The GJNC is coming off its biggest year yet with 1,184 teams and over 12,000 athletes participating in Dallas from June 28 – July 5. The GJNC will be celebrating its 35th year with the 2014 edition.
“As Commissioner and on behalf of the Great Lakes Region Board of Directors we couldn’t be happier and more excited to have the opportunity to host a USAV GJNC Qualifier in the world’s largest convention center in a world-class city like Chicago,” Sandy Abbinanti, Great Lakes Region Commissioner. “Chicago is an ideal Midwest venue offering five-star hotels, a variety of delicious food and many family attractions.
“We would like to thank USA Volleyball for allowing us to bring a National Qualifier to the Chicago land area. We know there is a tremendous amount of work to be done to successfully host this tournament but we look forward to the challenge of not only showcasing our city but also making this GNJQ an enjoyable family event that our athletes will embrace and look forward to competing in every year.”
