Fopma, Sweat Win Beach Bronze in Berlin

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 11, 2013) – Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat won their first medal at an FIVB Beach Volleyball Grand Slam on Sunday as they won the bronze at the Berlin Grand Slam in Germany.

Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 16 in the main draw and competing in their first FIVB semifinals, defeated Czech Republic’s first time semifinalists Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova, seeded No. 17, 21-18, 17-21, 15-12 in 54 minutes in the bronze medal match.

In the semifinals, Fopma and Sweat fell to Germany’s No. 1 seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler in three sets, 21-17, 16-21, 15-10 in 47 minutes.

Fopma and Sweat’s previous best FIVB international finish was a fifth place at the FIVB Gstaad Grand Slam in Switzerland. They also finished ninth at the Grand Slams in Rome and Long Beach, Calif. They are the second U.S. women’s team to win an FIVB Grand Slam medal in 2013. April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) took silver at the Moscow Grand Slam.
