COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 8, 2013) – Three U.S. men’s teams advanced and four women’s teams won matches on Thursday at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Berlin Grand Slam.
In the men’s bracket, Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded No. 6 in the tournament, won their final pool play match over Poland’s No. 11 Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel on Thursday (21-17, 21-18 in 39 minutes) to finish 3-0. They advanced straight to Friday’s second round.
Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 5, fell in their final pool play match to Spain’s No. 12 Pablo Herrera Allepuz and Adrián Gavira Collado (21-18, 24-22 in 43 minutes). They will play in the first round on Friday against Brazil’s No. 4 Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Álvaro Morais Filho.
Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks), seeded No. 30 after having to qualify for the main draw, finished pool play 2-1 after defeating Germany’s No. 19 Markus Böckermann and Mischa Urbatzka (21-14, 21-18 in 33 minutes) on Thursday. The U.S. pair will face Germany’s No. 8 Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif in Friday’s first round.
No. 21 Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) went 0-3 in pool play and did not advance.
In women’s pool play, which started on Thursday, the U.S. teams of Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) along with Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) each went 2-0.
Kessy and Ross, seeded No. 5, defeated Argentina’s No. 28 Ana Gallay and Georgina Klug (21-10, 21-9 in 33 minutes) and Finland’s No. 21 Emilia Nystrom and Erika Nystrom (21-12, 21-13 in 31 minutes).
No. 10 Fendrick and Hochevar beat Germany’s No. 23 Karla Borger and Julia Sude (22-24, 21-17, 15-9 in 56 minutes) and Kazakhstan’s No. 26 Tatyana Mashkova and Irina Tsimbalova (21-19, 18-21, 15-9 in 46 minutes).
Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded No. 16 and the new team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 18, each went 1-1 on Thursday.
Fopma and Sweat beat Russia’s No. 32 Alexandra Shiryaeva and Ekaterina Syrtseva (15-21, 21-16, 15-13 in 44 minutes) and fell to Czech Republic’s Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova (21-11, 22-20 in 37 minutes).
Day and Pavlik defeated Australia’s No. 15 Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy (16-21, 25-23, 16-14) and lost to Brazil’s Taiana Lima and Talita Da Rocha Antunes (21-16, 21-15 in 36 minutes).
The Berlin smart Grand Slam is the seventh Grand Slam on the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, which is comprised of 10 Grand Slam events and the 2013 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championships. There are also eight Open events and while they are not part of the World Tour, they still count towards the FIVB World Rankings and help open the door for development of the sport.
The tournament concludes with the women’s gold and bronze medal matches on Sunday August 11, while the men’s medal matches take place on Saturday August 10.
