COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 30, 2013) – Pool play in the main draw of the FIVB Shanghai Grand Slam, part of the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, will begin on Wednesday without the U.S. men’s team of Todd Rogers and Ryan Doherty.
Rogers and Doherty, seeded No. 1 in the qualification bracket, fell in the qualification round on Tuesday, losing their second match to Germany’s No. 17 Mischa Urbatzka and Markus Bockermann, 21-15, 21-13 in 32 minutes. In the first round of qualification, Rogers and Doherty defeated Switzerland’s No. 32 Roman Sutter and Andreas Martin Sutter, 21-18, 21-12 in 34 minutes.
The highest seeded U.S. men’s beach volleyball team in the main draw will be No. 2 Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), who won the FIVB Fuzhou Open last week. They are seeded behind No. 1 Penggen Wu and Jiaxin Wu from host China.
Rosenthal and Dalhausser will open play in Pool B on Wednesday against China’s No. 31 Lizeng Zhang and Zhuoxin Li. In the afternoon, they will face No. 18 Julius Brink and Sebastian Fuchs of Germany. Brink won the men’s beach volleyball gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with former partner Jonas Reckermann.
On Thursday, Rosenthal and Dalhausser will complete pool play against Austria’s 15th-seeded Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst. The first round of single elimination play will begin on Friday.
The U.S. men’s team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), seeded ninth, will play in Pool H and will open on Wednesday against Brazil’s No. 24 Vitor Felipe and Evandro Júnior. In the afternoon, Gibb and Patterson will take on Austria’s No. 25 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl, the team that eliminated the U.S. pair from the Fuzhou Open in the second round last week.
On Thursday, Gibb and Patterson will close out pool play against China’s eighth-seeded Linyin Xu and Peng Gao.
Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) will make their debut as a team seeded 14th in Pool C. They will open on Wednesday morning against Netherlands’ No. 19 Daan Spijkers and Steven van de Velde. In the afternoon, they will play No. 30 Urbatzka and Bockermann from Germany. On Thursday, they will finish pool play against Brazil’s No. 3 Pedro Salgado and Bruno Schmidt.
Qualification for the women’s main draw will also begin on Wednesday, with the U.S. team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), seeded No. 14, playing Norway’s No. 19 Cindy Treland and Janne Pedersen in the first round.
Play in the women’s main draw will begin on Thursday. The U.S. beach volleyball teams of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Ind.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) along with Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) are scheduled to compete.
