COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 26, 2013) – The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Sean Rosenthal and Phil Dalhausser has advanced to the semifinals of the FIVB Fuzhou Open in China while the women’s team of April Ross and Jennifer Kessy has reached the second round.
Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), the tournament’s No. 2 seeds who have yet to lose a set, defeated Russia’s 26th-seeded Konstantin Semenov and Yaroslav Koshkarev, 21-18, 21-18 (40 minutes) in Friday’s second round before defeating Poland’s No. 7 Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel, 21-16, 21-19 (37 minutes) in the third.
In Saturday’s men’s semifinals, Rosenthal and Dalhausser will face Brazil’s Ricardo Santos and Álvaro Filho. In the other semifinal, Italy’s No. 4 Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo will play Austria’s No. 32 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl. The men’s finals will also be played on Saturday.
Huber and Seidl were responsible for knocking the two other U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams out of the competition on Friday.
In the first round, the Austrian pair defeated 10th-seeded Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), 15-21, 24-22, 15-13 (58 minutes). In the second round, Huber and Seidl beat ninth-seeded Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), 21-18, 21-18 (36 minutes).
In the women’s bracket, Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) completed pool play undefeated on Friday, defeating Switzerland’s 13th-seeded Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich, 21-23, 21-10, 15-10 (53 minutes). Ross and Kessy advanced straight to the second round, where they will face No. 6 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of Czech Republic on Saturday. The third round will also be played on Saturday with the semifinals and finals on Sunday.
The other three U.S. women’s beach teams competing in China all completed play on Friday.
No. 20 Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Ind.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) lost their final pool play match on Friday to Poland’s No. 29 Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek, 21-17, 15-21, 19-17. They did not advance from pool play.
The 27th-seeded team of Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) defeated Canada’s No. 22 Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney on Friday, 21-13, 21-10 (28 minutes) to finished 2-1 in pool play and advance to the first round. There, the U.S. pair fell to 18th-seeded Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger, 23-25, 21-19, 15-10 (53 minutes).
The 28th-seeded U.S. team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) also won their final pool play match over Switzerland’s No. 21 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré, 21-19, 21-19 in 36 minutes. The U.S. team finished pool play 1-2 and advanced to the first round where it lost to the Czech Republic’s No. 24 Martina Bonnerová and Barbora Hermannová, 20-22, 21-18, 20-18 (49 minutes).
