U.S. Men's Beach Teams Break Pool in Fuzhou

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 25, 2013) – All three U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams competing at the FIVB Fuzhou Open broke pool on Thursday and will advance to single-elimination play at the tournament in China.

Meanwhile in the women’s bracket, the U.S. beach volleyball team of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) is undefeated in pool play. The team of Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) is 1-1 after an impressive pool play upset.

In the men’s bracket, Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), seeded No. 2 in the tournament, advanced to the second round by winning Pool B. They closed out pool play on Thursday with a 21-14, 21-17 victory over Poland’s 15th-seeded Michal Kadziola and Jakub Szalankiewicz. In Friday’s first round, Rosenthal and Dalhausser will play the winner of the first-round match between Russia’s 26th-seeded Konstantin Semenov and Yaroslav Koshkarev and China’s No. 22 Cheng Chen and Jian Li.

The ninth-seeded U.S. team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) advanced to the second round after winning Pool H. On Thursday, they closed out play with a 21-18, 21-16 victory over No. 8 Linyin Xu and Peng Gao of China.

In Friday’s second round, Gibb and Patterson will play the winner of the first-round match between the 10th-seeded U.S. pair of Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Austria’s No. 32 Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl. Doherty and Rogers dropped their final match in Pool G on Thursday, falling to Poland’s No. 7 Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel, 21-19, 21-19 in 39 minutes.

In the women’s bracket, the U.S. team of Summer Ross and Hochevar opened play on Thursday with an impressive 26-24, 21-18, 15-12 (59 minutes) upset of No. 6 Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova of Czech Republic. Ross and Hochevar lost their afternoon Pool F match to No. 11 Liliana Fernández Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan of Spain, 21-19, 21-14 in 35 minutes. Ross and Hochevar will finish pool play on Friday against Canada’s No. 22 Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney.

The No. 4 U.S. women’s team of April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), the 2012 Olympic silver medalists, won their first two matches in Pool D in straight sets. Ross and Kessy opened by defeating their U.S. teammates Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Ind.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.), who are seeded 20th, 21-18, 25-23 in 44 minutes. In the afternoon, Ross and Kessy beat Poland’s No. 29 Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek, 21-15, 21-17 in 37 minutes. Ross and Kessy will complete pool play on Friday against Switzerland’s 13th-seeded Nadine Zumkehr and Joana Heidrich.

Fendrick and Branagh lost to Zumkehr and Heidrich, 18-21, 21-19, 15-9 in 55 minutes, the longest women’s match of the day. They will complete pool play on Friday against Kolosinska and Brzostek.

The U.S. team of Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), seeded 28th, fell to Germany’s fifth-seeded Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler, 21-12, 21-19 in 31 minutes to open Pool E. In the afternoon, they lost to Brazil’s No. 12 Liliane Maestrini and Barbara Seixas De Freitas, 21-14, 21-16 in 33 minutes. On Friday, Fopma and Sweat will close pool play against Switzerland’s No. 21 Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré.
