| Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów celebrate winning
the Polish Plus Liga championship.
U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Polish league team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów repeated as league champions with a 28-26, 14-25, 25-17, 25-19 victory over ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle in the deciding match of the series on April 20. Lotman scored five points in the match, scoring on three kills, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 31 receptions, 45 percent excellent. To view photos from the match, click here. U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel finished third in the playoffs after Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Delecta Bydgoszcz, 3-1 in the bronze medal series. In the deciding match on April 16, Jastrzębski Węgiel won 25-17, 25-17, 25-14. Holmes scored 10 points on one attack, a match-high five blocks and a match-high four aces. U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and the German league team the Berlin Recycling Volleys opened the final round of the playoffs with a 27-25, 23-25, 26-24, 25-15 victory over U.S. middle blocker Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.) and visiting Vfb Friedrichshafen. Touzinsky scored five points on five attacks. He was also credited with 21 receptions, 67 percent positive. Shoji started the first three sets and scored three points on three blocks and also helped set the team to a 49.1 kill percent and a .436 hitting efficiency. U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and his Italian Serie A league team Copra Elior Piacenza have advanced to the finals of the league playoffs where they will play defending champion Itas Diatec Trentino beginning on April 25. Piacenza won its semifinal series on April 17 with a 26-28, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15 victory over Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata. Holt scored 10 points on six attacks (75.0 kill percent, .625 hitting efficiency), three blocks and one ace.
U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and his Turkish league team Halkbank Ankara are playing Arkas Izmir Spor, the team of U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, in the finals of the Turkish league playoffs.
Arkas Izmir Spor won its semifinal playoff series with a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 victory over U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK on April 17. Billings led his team with 20 points on 16 attacks (61.5 kill percent, .538 hitting efficiency), three blocks and one ace. Hansen did not play in the match. Halkbank advanced to the final with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-13 victory over Fenerbahce Grundig on April 17. Priddy scored three points on three kills. He was credited with 14 receptions, 86 percent positive.
In the first match of the finals, Izmir defeated Halkbank, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22. Priddy scored nine points on four kills, three blocks and two aces. Hansen did not play in the match. The teams will play again on April 24.
U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and the French league team Tours have advanced to the playoff finals of the French league after defeating Narbonne, 3-1 in the semifinals. On April 19, Tours defeated Narbonne, 29-27, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22. Smith scored nine points on five attacks, three blocks and one ace. On April 20, Tours beat Narbonne, 25-22, 25-23, 25-17. Smith scored 12 points on seven kills (70.0 kill percent, .700 hitting efficiency), one block and a match-high four aces. The league finals are scheduled to begin on April 30.
There is still the chance that Tours could play Cannes, the team of U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles) in the finals. Cannes is 2-2 in their semifinal playoff with Paris. The deciding match will be played on April 23. On April 19, Cannes defeated Paris, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13. Tarr scored eight points on seven kills and one ace. He was credited with seven receptions, 86 percent positive. Rawson did not play in the match. On April 20, Cannes defeated Paris, 25-22, 25-18, 26-24. Tarr scored 10 points on eight kills and two blocks. He was credited with 10 receptions, 60 percent positive. Rawson played as a substitute and scored two points on an attack and a block.
A correction to last week’s note: In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.), ended its season on April 13 with a 3-1 victory over Canteleu. Orange finished the season second in the league. However, it did not get to compete in the four-team league playoffs due to the "late submission of financial documents by the new club," according to a press release translated from French.
U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan have advanced to the semifinals of the Russian Super League playoffs, where they will play Lokomotiv Belogorie Belgorod. Kazan won its quarterfinal series against Kuzbass Kemerovo, 3-1. On April 17, Kemerovo defeated Kazan, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-19. Anderson scored seven points on seven kills. He was credited with eight receptions, 63 percent positive. To view photos from the match, click here. On April 18, Kazan came back to defeat Kemerovo, 25-17, 25-22, 25-13. Anderson led Kazan with 15 points on 12 attacks (60.0 kill percent, .550 hitting efficiency), two blocks and one ace. To view photos from the match, click here. The semifinals will begin on April 25.
