COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 21, 2013) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik won its second NORCECA Beach Circuit silver medal of 2013 on Sunday in Guatemala.
The USA-1 team of Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), the tournament’s defending champions, fell to the Canada-1 team of Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker in Sunday’s gold medal match, 21-17, 21-16. It was the second silver medal of the season for Kropp and Pavlik, who also placed second at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in the Cayman Islands.
The USA-2 women’s beach team of Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) won the bronze medal in Guatemala while the USA-1 men’s team of Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) placed fourth.
Kropp and Pavlik advanced to the finals by defeating Hochevar and Day in Sunday’s semifinals, 19-21, 21-11, 15-10.
Hochevar and Day won the bronze medal by defeating the Guatemala-1 team of Maria Jose Orellana and Lourdes Ramirez, 21-13, 21-8. Hochevar won the silver medal with Summer Ross at the last NORCECA Beach Circuit event in the Dominican Republic.
U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams have won one gold medal, three silvers and two bronze in the first three NORCECA events of 2013.
Mayer and Slick lost in the men’s semifinals to Cuba’s Karell Piña and Sergio Gonzalez, 21-18, 21-19. In the bronze medal match Mayer and Slick lost to the Puerto Rico-1 team of Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock, 24-22, 16-21, 16-14
