COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 20, 2013) – Two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams and one men’s team have advanced to Sunday’s semifinal matches at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Guatemala.
The event is the third on the NORCECA beach tour this year.

The women’s USA-1 team of Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), which is the defending champion, will have to play their compatriots, Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) and Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) in one of the women’s semifinals. In the other semifinal, the Canada-1 team of Kacie MacTavish and Caleigh Whitaker will play the Guatemala-1 team of Maria Jose Orellana and Lourdes Ramirez.
In the men’s bracket, the USA-1 team of John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) will face Cuba’s Karell Piña and Sergio Gonzalez. In the other men’s semifinal, Puerto Ricans Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock will play Mexicans Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros.
In women’s action on Saturday, Kropp and Pavlik won their pool by defeating Jamie Farley and Laurie Bachler of the Virgin Islands, 21-6, 21-6 in 23 minutes. In their quarterfinal match, Kropp and Pavlik beat Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte of the Dominican Republic, 21-9, 21-19 in 35 minutes.
Hochevar and Day, who won both their pool play matches on Friday, went straight to the quarterfinals on Saturday where they defeated the Canada-2 team of Victoria Altomare and Sophie Bukovec, 21-19, 21-16 in 30 minutes.
In men’s play on Saturday, Mayer and Slick completed pool play with a victory over the El Salvador-2 team of Carlos Guatemala and Armando Guatemala, 21-11, 21-13 in 26 minutes. The U.S. pair advanced straight to the quarterfinals, where they beat Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido, 21-12, 22-20 in 32 minutes.
After going 0-2 on Friday, the USA-2 team of Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) won their final pool play match on Saturday, defeating the Canada-2 team of Michael Plantinga and Cameron Wheelan, 21-18, 21-19 in 33 minutes. However the pair did not advance from pool play.
