COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 20, 2013) – Pepperdine’s sand volleyball team defeated Long Beach State University, 3-2 in the final of the team competition to win the USA Volleyball Beach Collegiate Challenge on Saturday in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
Saturday’s competition saw eight NCAA Division I college sand teams seeded into two pools with each team playing three dual meets. Top-seeded Pepperdine and second-seeded Long Beach State each won their respective pools with 3-0 records.
In the final, Pepperdine’s No. 1 team of Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill defeated Long Beach State’s Caitlin Ledoux and Alex Reid, 21-13, 21-11. The Waves’ No. 2 team of Lara Dykstra and Caitlin Racich defeated LBSU’s Delainey Aigner and Chelsea Cabrajac, 22-24, 21-9, 15-13. Pepperdine’s No. 3 team of Kellie Larsen and Kellie Woolever beat LBSU’s Libby Fontanilla and Bre Mackie, 21-12, 21-11.
Long Beach State got wins from its No. 4 team of Jocelyn Neely and Lauren Minkle, which beat Victoria Adelhelm and Taylor Racich, 21-17, 21-18; and also its No. 5 team of Janisa Johnson and Tyler Jackson, which defeated Emily Cook and Katie Messing, 21-14, 21-16.
Pepperdine’s teams went undefeated in pool play as it beat Hawaii, UCLA and Santa Clara all 5-0.
Long Beach State beat Loyola Marymount and CSU Bakersfield, 5-0 and went 4-1 against the University of Southern California, which saw its No. 1 team of Kirby Burnham and Stevi Robinson defeat Long Beach State’s Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke, 18-21, 22-20, 15-10.
Sunday’s action will start at 9 a.m. and will consist of a flighted pairs competition with gold, silver and bronze divisions (the top 16 teams will compete in the gold division). Pairs will get ranking points based on their finish that will help them qualify for the pair competition of the AVCA Collegiate Championships on May 3-5 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
