Two U.S. Men's Teams Unbeaten in Chula Vista
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (Sept. 28, 2012) – Two U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams went undefeated on the first day of pool play at the 2012 NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
There are five U.S. men’s teams competing in the 16-team men’s bracket, which is split into four pools. Pool play will conclude on Saturday and the first rounds of single-elimination will begin.
The men’s team of Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Tri Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) went 2-0 in their four-team pool on Friday as did Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.).
The USA3 team of Montgomery and Bourne took victories in Pool C over Guatemala’s Andy Leonardo and Erick Garrido (21-14, 21-15) and Saint Lucia’s Julian Bissette and Joseph Clercent, (21-7, 21-17).
“We’re still working out the kinks,” Bourne said of the team’s first day of competition. “We’ve only played in one tournament together so we are still working stuff out. But we got it done and that’s all that matters.”
Montgomery agreed that the team is improving.
“We’ve only had four or five practices together, but I think we’re getting better every set,” he said. “Hopefully, by the time Sunday rolls around, we’re peaking.”
Montgomery and Bourne will conclude pool play on Saturday against Arnold Delancy and John Cuero of Turks & Caicos.
The USA2 men’s team of Carlson and Ciarelli also went 2-0, defeating the Canada2 duo of Cameron Wheelan and Michael Plantinga (21-12, 21-18) and Trinidad & Tobago’s Kevin Rivers and Christian Francois (21-10, 21-16).
Carlson and Ciarelli will conclude pool play on Saturday against the USA1 team of Alex Jones (Northridge, Calif.) and Kyle Stevenson (Santa Monica, Calif.), who went 1-1 on Friday.
Jones and Stevenson defeated Trinidad & Tobago’s Kevin Rivers and Christian Francois (21-13, 21-11), but lost to Canada’s Wheelan and Plantinga (21-13, 21-19).
The USA4 team of Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Parker Kalmbach (Newport Beach, Calif.) also went 1-1. Cabbage and Kalmbach lost to the Canada1 duo of Chaim Schalk and Benjamin Saxton (21-17, 24-22) and defeated Jeovanny Medrano and David Vargas of El Salvador (21-13, 21-16).
They will finish pool play on Saturday against Marc Lomeli and Anthony Pippen of U.S. Virgin Islands.
The USA5 team of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Jesse Rambis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) went 0-2 on Friday after forfeiting their first match against the Dominican Republic and falling to Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen of Mexico (21-17, 21-16) in the second.
Drost and Rambis will finish pool play on Saturday against Marcelo Araya and Jonathan Guevara of Costa Rica.
The tournament is free and open to the public. Pool play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 29) with the matches starting at 9 a.m. Playoff matches will begin at 1 p.m. with the final matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 30).
