HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 23, 2012) – The beach volleyball teams of Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik along with John Hyden and Sean Scott won the titles of national champions on Sunday at the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series National Championships in Huntington Beach.Sean Scott, left, and John Hyden celebrate their victory in Huntington Beach

Kropp (Holly Glen, Calif.) and Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) had little trouble dispatching Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Rachel Scott (Laguna Beach, Calif.), 21-14, 21-18, and winning their sixth Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Series event of the season.

Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Scott (Kailua, Hawaii) won their fifth Jose Cuervo tournament of the season with a 21-15, 21-12 victory over Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who were playing their final match as a team.

“I have a lot of respect for that team,” Scott said of Gibb and Rosenthal. “I’m so glad we got to play them in their last match together.”

The two teams were tied in kills, 17-17, as Hyden led all players with 10 and Gibb added nine for his team. Scott had three blocks while Gibb and Rosenthal did not have a block. Hyden had and ace as did Rosenthal.

Huntington Beach will be the last tournament of the season for Hyden and Scott, who had several season highlights.Whitney Pavlik, left, and Jenny Kropp hug it out after their victory in Huntington Beach

“Definitely Manhattan Beach (was a highlight),” Scott said. “Then going into Cincinnati (for the AVP tournament) and winning there because Cincinnati was a full draw. Everybody was there. We beat Todd (Rogers) and Phil (Dalhausser) and we beat Matt (Fuerbringer) and Nick (Lucena). That stretch right there, where we won Hermosa, Manhattan and Cincinnati (was the highlight).”

Kropp and Pavlik plan to finish their season at the FIVB World Tour event on Oct. 23-28 in Thailand. But they were happy to end their domestic season with another tournament victory.

“I think you always set goals and it was one of our goals to win the (Jose Cuervo) series,” Kropp said. “Sometimes you set lofty goals and you don’t always think you are going to achieve them, but you might as well set high goals and go for them and I think that’s what we did. We couldn’t be happier right now.”

The win in Huntington was the icing on the cake for Pavlik.

“I grew up in Laguna Beach so I have so many of my friends and family here,” she said. “I have friends that traveled from other states who came to watch. It was great doing it here in front of them.”

Kropp and Pavlik led in kills 25-13 as Pavlik led all players with 17 while Scott led her team with 10. Kropp and Pavlik led in aces, 3-1 as Pavlik had all three aces for her team while Scott had one. Fendrick and Scott led in blocks, 4-3 as Fendrick finished with four and Kropp had three.

In the women’s semifinals, Kropp and Fendrick defeated Brooke Niles (Woodland Hills, Calif.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.), 21-17, 17-21, 15-10. Fendrick and Scott beat Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower) and Brooke Sweat (Hermosa Beach), 15-21, 21-19, 18-16.

In the men’s semifinals, Hyden and Scott defeated Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), 21-13, 21-16. Gibb and Rosenthal beat Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), 21-14, 21-19.
