ANAHEIM, Calif. (Sept. 20, 2012) – Olympic silver medalist April Ross is scheduled to compete on Sept. 28-30 at the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who won the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with partner Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), will compete at Chula Vista with Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.). Fopma finished first with partner Brooke Sweat this year at the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Tour event in Milwaukee and had second-place finishes with Sweat at Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.
The NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour will include teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The event in Chula Vista will be free and open to the public.
Among the other U.S. women’s players competing will be San Diego’s Summer Ross (no relation to April), who recently won the gold medal at the World University Championships in Brazil, and also won the 2010 FIVB youth and junior beach world championships. Ross will compete with Morgan Beck (Coto de Caza, Calif.).
On the men’s side, Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.), who won Jose Cuervo Pro Beach events in Belmar, N.J., and Chicago and finished second in Manhattan Beach, Calif., are scheduled to compete. At 7 feet, 1 inch, Doherty is one of the tallest beach volleyball players in the world.
Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.) will compete with partner Jeff Carlson (Newport Beach, Calif.). The pair won the silver medal at the 2008 FIVB youth world championship.
Teams from Canada, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador, among others, are expected to compete.
