COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 16, 2012) – U.S. Olympians April Ross and Jake Gibb were the winners of the National Volleyball League (NVL) Best of the Beach tournament on Sept. 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev.
In the Best of the Beach format, athletes compete with different partners in each match as they try to score individual points.
Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who won a silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games with partner Jennifer Kessy (San Juan Capistrano. Calif.), paired with Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) in the final match on Saturday as they defeated second-place Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and her partner Raquel Feirerra (Minas Geras, Brazil), 21-11, 21-14.
Ross did not lose a match in the tournament. On the way to the final, she partnered with Megan Wallin (Sarasota, Fla.), Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos, Calif.), Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Kathryn Piening (Kalamazoo, Mich.), Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Sweat (Fort Meyers, Fla.).
Gibb also did not lose a match in the tournament. In Saturday’s final, he partnered with Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to defeat second-place Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.), who teamed up with Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.), 21-15, 18-21, 15-12.
Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) finished fifth at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.
On his way to the final, Gibb partnered with John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), Evan Engle (Cedarville, Mich.), Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.), John Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.), Dalhausser and Lucena.
The total tournament prize purse was $100,000.
The next NVL event will be the Qualifier Tour Championships on Sept. 29-30 in Santa Monica, Calif.
