Women's Beach Teams to Play in Quarterfinals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 14, 2012) – The two U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams competing at the World University Championships in Maceio, Brazil will play each other in the quarterfinals on Saturday while the men’s teams are still alive in consolation.

The U.S. women’s team of Emily Day (Torrance, Calif./Loyola Marymount) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif./Pepperdine) opened play on Friday with a 21-17, 21-17 victory over Russia’s Elizaveta Ryabova and Maria Ushkova in the second round.Summer Ross passes the ball at the 2012 FIVB Beach Junior World Championships

They followed that with a third-round win over Czech Republic’s Martina Bonnerova and Barbora Hermannova.

The U.S. women’s team of Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif./Long Beach State) and Geena Urango (Los Alamitos, Calif./Univ. of Southern California) opened Friday by beating Kaila Ng and Alexandra Hudson of Canada, 21-11, 21-13 in the second round.

In the third round, Ledoux and Urango topped Switzerland’s Muriel Grassli and Tanja Huberli – a team they also beat in pool play – with a 2-1 score.

The semifinals are also scheduled to be played on Saturday with the finals on Sunday. The team that loses on Saturday will move to the consolation bracket.

On the men’s side, both U.S. teams lost their second-round matches on Friday, but will play consolation matches on Saturday.

The U.S. team of Jeremy Casebeer (Santa Barbara, Calif./UCLA) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif./UC Irvine) fell to Brazil’s Benjamin Álvaro Filho and Luciano Gilmário, 2-0. The U.S. pair will play Switzerland’s Fabio Berta and Alexei Prawdzic in consolation on Saturday.

The team of Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M./Univ. of New Mexico) and Connor Hughes (Costa Mesa, Calif./UC Irvine) lost to Bergmann and Stiel of Germany, 2-0.

The U.S. duo will face Simon Fecteau-Boutin and Cameron Wheelan of Canada in consolation on Saturday.

More than 40 teams representing 17 countries from the Americas, Europe and Asia are participating in this International University Sports Federation (FISU) event. Players from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Paraguay, Japan, Poland, China, Slovakia, Thailand, Russia, Spain, United States, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia, Austria and Chinese Taipei are competing.

The U.S. women’s team of Chrissie Zartman and Tracy Lindquist won the gold medal at the World University Championships in 2004. The U.S. men’s team of Mark VanZweiten and Joey Dykstra won the bronze medal at the 2008 Championships while John Mayer and Matt Prosser took bronze in 2006.
