Guatemala Trims Honduras for Fifth Place at NORCECA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sep. 1, 2012) –Guatemala edged Honduras 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-9 in the 2012 NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship fifth-place match Saturday afternoon at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez Paz, the tournament’s leading scorer, produced 26 points for Guatemala while teammate Erick Noel Colindres Ipina and Christopher Leon Du John added 11 points each.

Honduras was led by Frank Alley with 21 points and Diego Chavez totaled 12 points with eight blocks. Jose Vasquez and Ricardo Vasquez each added 10 points.

Guatemala’s serve netted a 9-4 margin in aces to compensate for Honduras’ 17-13 advantage in blocks. Guatemala also had a 33-24 margin in digs.

Guatemala jumped to an 8-2 lead in the opening set and maintained the margin for a 25-18 victory that included six blocks and three aces. While Honduras lost the opening set, it gained key momentum after the slow start and used that to take a 16-9 advantage in the second set. Guatemala battled back to within 22-19, but Honduras scored three of the final four points for a 25-20 victory in evening the match. Guatemala reached the third set’s second technical timeout leading 16-11 and withstood a Honduras charge to within 20-17 before winning 25-20. Honduras came out strong in the fourth set with a 7-3 advantage, but Guatemala stormed back to knot the score at 7-all and built a 12-9 advantage at a Honduras timeout. Guatemala extended its lead to 16-11 before Honduras rallied to take the lead back at 20-19. After Honduras held a 22-20 lead, Guatemala tied the set at 22-all and reached match points at 24-23. Honduras saved the match point and reversed the lead to 25-24 and pushed the match to a fifth set with a Ricardo Vasquez kill at 26-24. Guatemala jumped to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set with an ace and block, but Honduras answered with four points capped by an ace to take a 4-3 lead. Guatemala took the lead back 6-4 on back-to-back Honduras errors and a block. Guatemala increased its lead to 9-5. After Honduras trimmed it to 9-7, Guatemala closed out the set at 15-9.

“We are happy for the win,” Guatemala captain Erick Noel Colindres Ipina said. “It was our objective to finish fifth place or higher. It was a tough We are happy with the victory. Congratulations to Honduras for a good match. They played well.”

“This was the first match we played five sets, and we went to that instance because the teams are very similar,” Guatemala head coach Jorge Chavez said. “Believe it or not it was a Central America Final, and it is a fact it was a tight game. I am happy with the result because it helps our ranking from seventh place in Canada at the 2010 NORCECA championship. I want to congratulate Honduras for a great match. I am always proud of my players. They play with heart. I hope we have a more competitive team the next time we play.”
