U.S. Men's Update: Anderson Rolling in Russia

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 9, 2012) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.) has begun play in the Russian Super League with Zenit Kazan, which is getting ready to compete in the FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships on Oct. 13-19 in Doha, Qatar.
Kazan has been one of the most successful Russian teams in recent years. In 2011-12 it won the Russian Super League Championship, the CEV Champions League and the Cup of Russia.
Kazan is 4-0 in its first four 2012 Russian Super League matches. The team opened the season on Sept. 29 with a 22-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-16, 15-10 victory over Lokomotiv Novosibirsk. Anderson started all five sets and finished with 16 points on 14 kills and two aces. To view a photo gallery, click here.
On Oct. 3, Kazan scored a 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20 victory over VK Grozny. Anderson substituted in the second set and started the third and fourth, finishing with 11 points on nine attacks, one block and one ace. To view a photo gallery, click here.
On Oct. 6, Kazan defeated Fakel Novy Urengoy, 18-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-11. Anderson started the first two sets and finished with nine points on seven kills, one block and one ace. To view a photo gallery, click here.
On Oct. 9, Kazan beat Ural Ufa, 22-25, 25-19, 25-22, 17-25, 20-18.
Kazan will begin play in Pool B of the Club World Championship on Oct. 13. Other teams in Pool B are PGE Skra Belchatow (Poland), Al-Arabi (Qatar) and Zamalek (Africa). Teams competing in Pool A are Trentino Diatec (Italy), Tigres UANL (Mexico), Al-Rayyan Sport Club (Qatar) and Sada Cruzeiro (Brazil).
It will begin defense of its CEV Championship League title on Oct. 24 when it will host Belgium’s Knack Roeselare.
The 2012-13 Polish Plus Liga season has started and U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów are already 2-0.
On Oct. 6, Resovia Rzeszów, the defending Plus Liga champion, defeated Indykpol AZS Olsztyn, 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. Lotman started all three sets and scored five points on three kills, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 22 receptions, 86 percent positive.
On Oct. 9, Resovia Rzeszów defeated PGE Skra Bełchatów, 22-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-21, 15-11. Lotman started all five sets and finished with eight points on six attacks, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 39 receptions, 64 percent positive.
Resovia Rzeszów will begin play in the CEV Champions League on Oct. 25 against Arago de Sete.
U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.) and Jastrzębski Węgiel won their first match on Oct. 6 over Effector Kielce, 25-15, 27-25, 25-22. Holmes started all three sets and finished with four points on three kills and one block.

Jastrzębski Węgiel will begin play in the CEV Cup on Oct. 24.
The Italian Serie A league began play on Oct. 7 as U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) helped Copra Elior Piacenza to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 sweep of CMC Ravenna. Holt finished with eight points on four kills, two blocks and two aces.
U.S. outside hitter Futi Tavana (Saipipi, Samoa) is also on the roster for Piacenza, but did not play.
U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.) and Andreoli Latina got off to a good start, sweeping Sir Safety Perugia, 25-17, 25-18, 25-23. Troy substituted in the second set and started the third, finishing with four points on three kills and one ace.
Latina will begin play in the CEV Cup on Oct. 24.
U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) made his Italian league debut with Castellana Grotti in its 25-20, 25-20, 23-25, 25-20 defeat of Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo. Menzel started the first two sets and finished with four points on three attacks and one block.
In Italy’s Serie A2 league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) made his debut with Sieco Service Ortona on Oct. 7, helping his team to a 27-29, 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 15-11 victory over Tonazzo Padova.
Muagututia started all five sets and finished with 19 points on 18 attacks and one block.
The Finnish team Raision Loimu, which includes three U.S. players, is 2-2 after its first four matches.
Most recently, Loimu fell to Saimaa Volley, 36-34, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-6.
U.S. outside hitter Jordan DuFault (Lakewood, Calif.) started all five sets and finished with 11 points on 10 kills and one block. U.S. middle blocker Dan McDonnell (Glendale, Ariz.) substituted in the first set and started the next four, finishing with four points on three kills and one block.
U.S. opposite Dean Bittner (Lakewood, Calif.) substituted in every set and finished with five points on four attacks and one ace.
U.S. setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.) is playing for C.S. Remat Zalau in the Romanian volleyball league.
The team is 0-1 after falling to S.C.M.U. Craiova, 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-21 on Oct. 6.
Zalau will begin play in the CEV Champions League on Oct. 23.
