COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 7, 2012) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.
U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his French league team Tours, are now 5-0 after defeating Tourcoing, 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14 on Nov. 4. Smith started all four sets and scored nine points on six attacks and a team-high three blocks.
U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) led AS Cannes with 21 points but the team lost to Rennes, 26-24, 25-21, 25-23 on Nov. 11. Tarr scored on 18 attacks, one block and two aces. Middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles) played as a substitute but did not score for Cannes.
U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Montpellier fell to Sete, 3-2.
In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) improved to 4-1 after defeating Nancy, 25-18, 24-26, 25-23, 25-19 on Nov. 3. Scott started all three sets and scored nine points on six attacks and three blocks. He was also credited with 45 receptions, which were 84 percent positive. Vance also started all three sets and scored nine points on eight kills and one block. Watten was credited with 15 receptions, 93 percent positive.
Andreoli Latina, which includes U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.), improved to 4-0 in the Italian Serie A league with a 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, 25-18 victory over Cucine Lube Banca Marche Macerata on Nov. 4. Troy played as a substitute in the first and second sets and started the third and fourth to tie as the team’s leading scorer with 13 points on 11 kills and two aces.
U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored seven points on three attacks and a match-high four blocks as Copra Elior Piacenza defeated Casa Modena, 27-29, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 on Nov. 3. U.S. outside hitter Futi Tavana (Saipipi, Samoa) is also on the roster for Piacenza, but did not play.
U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.) started the first and second sets and scored one point on one kill as his team Castellana Grotte fell to Marmi Lanza Verona, 25-21, 25-14, 17-25, 25-18 on Nov. 4.
In Italy’s Serie B league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) scored 23 points in helping Sieco Service Ortona to a 25-22, 25-27, 27-25, 20-25, 15-13 victory over Coserplast Matera on Nov. 4. Muagututia scored on 21 attacks, one block and one ace. He was also credited with 29 receptions, 76 percent positive.
U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), another 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Skra Belchatow, 26-24, 20-25, 25-12, 25-23 on Nov. 4. Holmes started the first two sets and scored three points on two kills and one block.

U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Polish Plus Liga team Asseco Resovia Rzeszów fell to Delecta Bydgoszcz, 26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15, on Nov. 5. Lotman finished with nine points on six attacks and three blocks.

U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, and his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan improved to 6-0 after defeating Guberniya Nizniy Novgorod, 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 on Nov. 4. Kazan will begin play in the Cup of Russia tournament on Nov. 9
The Finnish team Raision Loimu, which includes three U.S. players, went 1-1 in its last two matches. On Nov. 3, Loimu defeated Liigariento Joensuu, 19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-22, 15-13. U.S. middle blocker Dan McDonnell (Glendale, Ariz.) started four sets and finished with 11 points on seven attacks, three blocks and one ace. U.S. opposite Dean Bittner (Lakewood, Calif.) played as a substitute and started the fifth set, finishing with nine points on six attacks, two blocks and one ace. U.S. outside hitter Jordan Dufault (Lakewood, Calif.) started the first two sets and scored six points on four kills, one block and one ace.
On Nov. 4, Loimu fell to Pielaveden Sampo, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22. Bittner started all three sets and finished with 12 points on nine attacks and three blocks. McDonnell started all three sets and scored six points on five attacks and one ace.
CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
In Pool A, Matt Anderson and Russia’s Zenit Kazan defeated Germany’s Vfb Friedrichshafen, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22 on Oct. 31 in Germany. Anderson started all three sets and scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and one ace. U.S. middle blocker Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.), who plays for Friedrichshafen, played as a substitute and scored one points on one kill. Kazan (2-0) will host Austria’s Hypo Tirol Innsbruck (0-2) in the third round on Nov. 14. To view a photo gallery, click here.
In Pool B, U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Germany’s Berlin Recycling fell to Russia’s Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, 26-24, 25-19, 27-29, 25-22. Touzinsky started all four sets and scored 10 points on eight kills and two aces. He was also credited with 29 receptions, 52 percent positive. Shoji scored two points on one kill and one ace and also set Berlin to a 48.4 kill percent and a .422 hitting efficiency. To view a photo gallery, click here. Berlin (1-1) will host Croatia’s Budvanska Rivijera Budva (0-2) in the next round on Nov. 13.
In Pool C, David Smith and Tours fell to visiting Trentino Diatec of Italy, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 on Nov. 1. Smith started all three sets and scored three points on two kills and one block. In Pool G, Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów defeated Romania’s Remat Zalau, 25-17, 25-23, 25-21 on Oct. 31 in Poland. Lotman did not play in the match. U.S. setter Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.), who was playing with Zalau, has left the team. Resovia Rzeszów (2-0) will host Italy’s Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo (2-0) in the next round on Nov. 15.

Murphy Troy and Italy’s Andreoli Latina defeated visiting Bulgaria’s CSKA Sofia, 25-16, 25-15, 23-25, 25-21 on Nov. 1. The victory advances Latina (2-0) to the round of 16, where it will play Finland’s VaLePa Sastamala in Finland on Nov. 14.
Russell Holmes and Poland’s Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated host France’s Rennes Volley, 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 on Oct. 31. The victory advances Węgiel (2-0) to the round of 16 where it will travel to Turkey to play Maliye Milli Piyango Ankara on Nov. 14.
Reid Priddy and Turkey’s Halkbank Ankara defeated visiting Delecta Bydgoszcz of Poland, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 16-14 on Nov. 1. Because Ankara had lost its first match against Bydgoszcz, the teams played a golden set, which Ankara won, 15-8. It will advance to host Landstede Zwolle of Netherlands in the round of 16 on Nov. 13. To view a photo gallery, click here.
In the Turkish league, U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK defeated Sivas Dort Eylul BLd. S., 25-21, 25-13, 25-17 on Oct. 31 in Turkish league play. Billings led all scorers with 18 points on a match-high 14 attacks and a match-high four blocks. Billings followed that up with a 20-point performance on Nov. 4 as Istanbul defeated Maliye Milli Piyango S., 19-25, 25-18, 25-18, 29-27 on Nov. 4. Billings scored on 18 kills and two blocks.
U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, and Arkas Spor defeated Fenerbahce Grundig, 20-25, 18-25, 25-22, 26-24, 15-11 on Nov. 4. Hansen started all five sets and scored one point with a block. He also set his team to a 45.4 kill percent and a .338 hitting efficiency.
U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, and Halkbank Ankara defeated Yenisehir Belediye Spor on Nov. 4, 25-12, 25-19, 25-17. Priddy started all three sets and scored 10 points on six kills, two blocks and two aces.
In the competition for the Turkish Cup, Priddy and Halkbank defeated Ziraat Bankasi, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21 on Oct. 7. Priddy started all three sets and scored 11 points on seven attacks, three blocks and one ace.
Billings and Istanbul BBSK defeated Maliye Milli Payango, 25-18, 25-13, 25-13 on Nov. 7. Billings scored 11 points on 10 attacks and one ace.
On Oct. 30, U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) led all scorers with 26 points on 23 kills and three aces as Plataneros de Corozal defeated Maratonistas de Coamo in the Puerto Rican league23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23. U.S. outside hitter Austin Rester, who plays for Coamo, scored 19 points on 16 attacks and three blocks.
On Nov. 2, Patak again led all scorers with 20 points on 14 kills, one block and five aces as Corozal beat Changos de Naranjito, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19. Corozal leads the league with a record of 11-3.
U.S. opposite David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.), a 2012 Olympian, and his team Patriotas de Lares defeated Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-11 on Oct. 31. McKienzie scored 16 points on 13 attacks, two blocks and one ace. U.S. outside hitter Steve Klosterman (Long Beach, Calif.), who plays for Carolina, scored four points on three kills and one block.
On Nov. 3, McKienzie led all scorers with 20 points on 17 kills, two blocks and one ace as Lares defeated Capitanes de Arecibo, 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 25-18.
