COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 27, 2012) – No. 2-seeded Jenny Kropp and Whitney Pavlik upset top-seeded Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson on Sunday to win the Florida Open, the first event of the 2012 Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series in Fort Lauderdale.

Despite losing the first set, Kropp (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Pavlik (Laguna Hills, Calif.) came back to defeat Fendrick (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Hanson (Ventura, Calif.), 14-21, 21-18, 15-10 in the final.

Both teams went undefeated in the tournament to reach the final. Kropp and Pavlik defeated No. 7 Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) in the semifinals, 14-21, 21-19, 15-13.

Fendrick and Hanson defeated No. 3 Nicole Branagh (Torrance, Calif.) and Tyra Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Florida), 21-17, 17-21, 17-15.

On the men’s side, the No. 1-seeded team of John Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Sean Scott (Redondo Beach, Calif.) sailed through the bracket without dropping a set, defeating No. 2 Brad Keenan (Santa Ana, Calif.) and John Mayer (Culver City, Calif.) in the final, 21-14, 21-18.

Hyden and Scott topped No. 6 Adrian Carambula (Miami Beach, Fla.) and Braidy Halverson (Grass Valley, Calif.) in the semifinals, 21-11, 21-15.

Keenan and Mayer beat No. 5 Billy Allen (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Russ Marchewka (San Diego, Calif.) in the semifinals, 21-15, 21-19.

Both winning teams pocketed $11,000.

Events on the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series are produced by IMG and sanctioned by USA Volleyball.

The Series will continue June 22-24 with the Belmar Open in New Jersey.
