COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 19, 2012) – Top-seeds Jen Kessy and April Ross won the women’s title on Saturday at the National Volleyball League event at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md.
On the men’s side, top-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) were upset in the final by No. 10-seeded Ryan Doherty (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.).
Doherty and Patterson needed 1 hour and 12 minutes to defeat Dalhausser and Rogers, 23-21, 19-21, 15-13.
Until the final, Dalhausser did not drop a set in the tournament, defeating Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), 21-18, 21-14 in 45 minutes in the semifinals.
Doherty and Patterson lost in the second round to Keenan and Meyer and had to win three consolation matches to reach the semifinals, where they beat Billy Allen (Fallbrook, Calif.) and Russ Marchewka (San Diego, Calif.), 21-17, 21-13 in 40 minutes.
On the women’s side, Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) defeated No. 2-seeded Jenny Kropp (Grand Island, Neb.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) in the final, 21-13, 21-16 in 44 minutes.
Kessy and Ross reached the finals by defeating No. 8 Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Priscilla Lima (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) in the semis, 21-8, 21-16 in 34 minutes. Kropp and Pavlik defeated No. 10 Raquel Ferreira (Minas Geras, Brazil) and Christal Engle (Puyallup, Wash.), 21-11, 21-14 in 41 minutes.
NVL events are sanctioned by USA Volleyball and players who compete receive a USA Volleyball national ranking.
