COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 19, 2012) – Christa Harmotto (Hopewell Township, Pa.) pocketed 18 points during the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage held May 19 at Irvine Valley College in Irvine, Calif.
The Blue Team won sets two and four 25-14 and 25-21, while the Red Team won sets one and three 25-19 and 25-21. However, players switched uniforms and sides throughout the match. The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team will host a second Red-Blue intrasquad scrimmage on May 26 at 5 p.m. PT inside Crawford Hall on the UC Irvine campus. The match is free to the public.
Harmotto alternated teams in each set, scoring nine points for both the Red Team and Blue Team and being on the winning side in each set. She compiled seven kills on 16 attacks, 10 blocks and an ace to reach a match-high 18 points.
Jordan Larson (Hooper, Neb.) and Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) each scored 17 points during the scrimmage. Larson tallied 11 kills, five blocks and an ace during the match while playing three sets for the Blue Team. Hooker contributed 13 kills on 27 attacks, two blocks and two aces as she played just the first three sets for the Blue Team.
Danielle Scott-Arruda (Baton Rouge, La.), playing three of the four sets for the Red Team, tallied six kills on 13 errorless attacks to go with three blocks and an ace. Megan Hodge (Durham, N.C.) charted 10 points in the match with nine kills and an ace in just three sets. Alix Klineman (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) contributed 10 points with seven kills and three blocks in just the final two sets playing for Team Red.
In the first set, Harmotto scored four quick points with three blocks to push the Red to a 5-1 advantage. Hooker kept the set close at 6-3 with a kill and block. Team Red scored six unanswered points to stretch its lead to 15-5 as Hodge and Cynthia Barboza (Long Beach, Calif.) scored two points each in the run. After Team Blue sliced the deficit to 15-7, Team Red scored six straight points that included four errors by Team Blue. Hooker scored three points and Tom added a kill in Team Blue’s 4-0 run that cut the gap to 22-12, but Team Red closed out the set 25-14 on a quick attack by Scott-Arruda.
Larson helped Team Blue to a 4-1 lead in the second set with a kill and block in the early going. After Team Red cut the deficit to 4-3, Larson added four points in a 5-1 run to push the score to 9-4. Hooker served consecutive aces to increase Team Blue’s lead to 12-4. Team Blue maintained control the rest of the way and reached set point at 24-17 on a Foluke Akinradewo (Plantation, Fla.) block after a Larson kill. Akinradewo ended the set at 25-19 on a kill.
In the third set, Team Red overcame a 12-11 deficit with a Klineman block and Harmotto ace as part of a 3-0 run. Team Red pushed the lead to 19-15 on a Larson kill, only to have Bown and Tom score consecutive kills to close Team Red to within 19-17. Scott-Arruda pushed Team Red back in front by four at 23-19 on a kill and her side closed out the set 25-21 on a Klineman block.
Team Red reached a 10-5 advantage in the fourth set on a 4-0 run that included two kills by Barboza and a block by Nancy Metcalf (Hull, Iowa). Team Blue quickly responded with three unanswered points capped by a Nicole Fawcett kill at 10-8. Harmotto put up consecutive blocks after a Larson block to narrow Team Blue’s deficit to 12-11. Team Blue leveled the set at 14-all on a Kristin Richards (Orem, Utah) block and went ahead 15-14 on a Fawcett kill. Leading 18-17, Team Blue quickly widened its advantage to 23-17 with four straight blocks that included three by Harmotto and one by Lloyd after Scott-Arruda started the 5-0 run with a kill. Harmotto ended the set and match with a kill at 25-21 after Team Red closed to 24-21 following a kill and ace by Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.).
