US Womens Beach Teams to Square Off in Beijing

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 10, 2012) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh and Jen Kessy/April Ross will meet in the second round of elimination on Friday at the Beijing Grand Slam, part of the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour.
On the men’s side, the U.S. teams of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.)/Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah)/Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who are battling for the second berth on the U.S. Olympic beach volleyball team, both went 2-0 in pool play on Thursday. The top-ranked U.S. team of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) went 1-1.
May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Walsh (San Jose, Calif.), seeded fourth, bounced back from their first-match, pool play loss on Wednesday. They won their second match on Wednesday and their third pool play match on Thursday over Switzerland’s 13th-ranked Nadine Zumkehr and Simone Kuhn, 21-13, 22-20 in 38 minutes.
They advanced to the second round where they will face compatriots Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) in an elimination match.
Kessy and Ross lost their final pool play match on Thursday to Australia’s 12th-ranked Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer due to an injury forfeit. However they came back in the first round to beat Germany’s No. 25-seed Jana Köhler and Julia Sude, 19-21, 29-27, 15-10 in 1 hour.
The U.S. team of 23rd-ranked team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) won their final pool play match over Russia’s No. 26-seeded Evgenia Ukolova and Ekaterina Khomyakova, 21-14, 21-13 in 33 minutes. But after going 1-2 in pool play, they lost their first-round match to Brazil’s second-ranked Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Maria Antonelli, 26-24, 21-12 in 38 minutes. They finished tied for 17th.
Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded seventh, entered Beijing with a 100 point lead over Gibb and Rosenthal for the second men’s spot on the U.S. Olympic beach volleyball team.
The pair opened pool play on Thursday with a 21-16, 21-14 victory in 41 minutes over Georgia’s 26th-ranked Renato Gomes and Jorge Terceiro. In their second match, Fuerbringer and Lucena topped New Zealand’s 23rd-seeded Jason Lochhead and Kirk Pitman, 21-18, 21-16 in 35 minutes.
They will finish pool play on Friday against China’s No. 10-seeded Linyin Xu and Penggen Wu.
Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), ranked 11th, defeated Germany’s 22nd-seeded Julius Brink and Sebastian Fuchs in their first pool play match, 21-12, 14-21, 15-10 in 48 minutes. They won their second pool play match over Austria’s No. 27-seeded Clemens Doppler and Alexander Horst, 21-23, 21-16, 15-8 in 47 minutes.
The U.S. pair will complete pool play on Friday against Brazil’s sixth-ranked Pedro Salgado and Marcio Araujo.
Top-seeded Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) began pool play on Thursday with a 23-21, 21-18 victory in 46 minutes over 32nd-ranked Igor Hernandez and Jesus Villafañe of Venezuela. However the reigning Olympic champions fell in their second match to Latvia’s 17th-seeded Aleksandrs Samoilous and Ruslans Sorokins, 21-14, 21-17 in 37 minutes.
They will complete pool play on Friday against Germany’s 16th-ranked Hase Klemperer and Eric Koreng.
