COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 1, 2012) – Three U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams will begin main draw play on Tuesday in China in the Shanghai Grand Slam, the first grand slam event on the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour.
The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Misty May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.), seeded fourth, will open pool play on Tuesday against Italy’s 29th-ranked Gioria Daniela and Giulia Momoli. In their second Tuesday match they will face Germany’s 20th-ranked Jana Köhler and Julia Sude.
On Wednesday, May-Treanor and Walsh will play Australia’s 13th-ranked Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer. The first round of elimination will also be played on Wednesday.
The fifth-ranked U.S. women’s team of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) will begin pool play on Tuesday against Austria’s 28th-seeded Doris Schwaiger and Stefanie Schwaiger. Kessy and Ross will play their second pool play match against Greece’s 21st-ranked Maria Tsiartsiani and Vasiliki Arvaniti.
On Wednesday, Kessy and Ross will complete pool play against Belgium’s 12th-ranked Liesbeth Mouha and Katrien Gielen.
Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) are seeded 15th and will begin pool play on Tuesday against Canada’s 18th-ranked Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney. Also on Tuesday they will face Georgia’s 31st-seeded Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Martins das Chagas.
On Wednesday, Fendrick and Hanson will complete pool play against Brazil’s No. 2-seeded Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Maria Antonelli.
The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) failed to advance to the main draw of the Shanghai Grand Slam, an event on the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.
Akers and Hochevar defeated Greece’s Christina Roubanis and Joanna Papageorgiou, ranked 28th in qualifying, in the first round, 21-17, 17-21, 15-10 in 48 minutes. But the U.S. pair fell in the second round to Netherlands’ Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel, ranked 12th, 16-21, 22-20, 15-6 in 45 minutes.
The men’s tournament will begin with the qualification bracket on Tuesday. The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) is ranked 25th and will open against the eighth-ranked French team of Andy Cès and Kevin Cès.
The U.S. men’s teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.)/Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.)/Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah)/Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) will begin main draw play on Wednesday.
