COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 30, 2012) – The U.S. women’s team of Jenny Kropp (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) and the U.S. men’s team of Matt Heagy (Phoenix, Md.) and Tony Pray (Tucson, Ariz.) began play at the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour event in Guatemala on Friday.

Kropp and Pavlik had only one match on the opening day, defeating Nicaragua’s Elia Torres and Swan Mendoza, 21-14, 21-14 in 33 minutes. On Saturday, the U.S. pair will play their second pool play match against the Guatemala 2 team of Nadia Galan and Anna Villagran in hopes of moving on to the first round of single elimination.

On the men’s side, which is a double-elimination bracket, Heagy and Pray lost their first match to Jamaica’s Gatasheu Bonner and Mark Lewis, 21-15, 14-21, 15-13 in 51 minutes. The U.S. team came back in consolation to defeat Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Carl Collins and Kemoroy Percival, 21-14, 21-12 in 31 minutes.

Play was set to continue on Saturday with the finals on Sunday.
