COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 25, 2012) – The top seeds were the big winners on Sunday at the USA Volleyball Beach International Development Qualifier (IDQ) at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Teams that finish IDQ events in first or second place have the opportunity to represent the United States in specific NORCECA (North and Central American and Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Tour international events.
In Sunday’s women’s final, the top-seeded team of Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.) and Jen Fopma (Bellflower, Calif.) defeated third-seeded Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Christal Engle (Puyallup, Wash.), 23-21, 14-21, 15-11 in 47 minutes.
To reach the final, Sweat and Fopma took a semifinal victory over fifth-seeded Sheila Shaw (Muskego, Wis.) and Kathryn Babcock (Kalamazoo, Mich.), 21-19, 15-21, 16-14 in 50 minutes.
In the other women’s semifinal, Day and Engle beat out second-seeded team of Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Kristen Batt (Venice, Fla.), 22-20, 21-16 in 43 minutes.
In Sunday’s men’s final, top-seeded Evan Engle (Cedarville, Mich.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) beat third-seeded David Smith (Denver, Colo.) and Skylar Delsol (Denver, Colo.), 29-27, 21-17 in 51 minutes.
In the men’s semifinals, Engle and Slick topped second-seeded Nils Nielson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.), 21-18, 21-16 in 40 minutes. Smith and Delsol defeated fourth-seeded Billy Kolinske (Big Bend, Wis.) and Raffe Paulis (Skokie, Ill.), 21-17, 13-21, 15-9 in 57 minutes.
USA Volleyball will hold its second 2012 IDQ on June 16-17 at a Los Angeles County site to be announced.
