COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 24, 2012) – Three U.S. teams got off to good starts on Friday at the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour event in Cayman Islands, the opening event of the 2012 series.

The USA-1 team of Jennifer Snyder (Glendale, Ariz.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) won its first and only match of the day, downing Sharon Payne and Rosemarie Simon of Antigua, 21-16, 21-6 in 31 minutes.

The U.S. pair will move on to play Brenda Allen and Shanicia Dyer of Saint Kitts on Saturday.

The USA-2 team of Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) and Traci Weamer (Upland, Calif.) won its first match of the day over Saint Lucia’s Jamilla Lansiquot and Sadia Baptiste, 21-8, 21-12 in 28 minutes.

The team lost its second match to Mexico-1’s Marta Revueltas and Vanessa Virgen, 21-14, 13-21, 26-24 in 1 hour, 10 minutes, the longest match of the day.

Moriarty and Weamer came back in consolation to defeat Veronique Berthelot and Cecile Pougeol of Micronesia (21-2, 21-11 in 26 minutes) and Jamaica-1’s Cherine Richards and Cheryl Daley (21-10, 21-6 in 26 minutes).

On the men’s side, the teams are opening in pool play where the U.S. pairing of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Steven VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) are 1-1 after the first day.

The U.S. team lost its first match to the Canada-2 pairing of Josh Binstock and Martin Reader, 20-22, 21-16, 15-12 in 1:01, the longest men’s match of the day.

Drost and VanderWerp came back in their second match to defeat Saint Lucia’s Julien Biscette and Gillan Octave, 21-9, 21-13 in 27 minutes.

Drost and VanderWerp will complete pool play on Saturday against Guatemala’s Andy Blanco and Erick Garrido.
