COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 24, 2012) – The U.S. women’s team of Jennifer Snyder and Heather Hughes has reached the semifinals of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tour event in Seven Miles Beach, Grand Cayman, the opening event of the 2012 series.

Snyder (Glendale, Ariz.) and Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) took two victories in the winners’ bracket on Saturday to reach Sunday’s semifinals, where they will face the Mexico-1 team of Marta Revueltas and Vanessa Virgen. In the other semifinal, the Mexico-2 team of Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia will play Puerto Rico’s Yarleen Santiago and Yamileska Yantin.

After going 1-0 on Friday, Snyder and Hughes opened Saturday with a 21-12, 21-9 victory in 33 minutes over Brenda Allen and Shanicia Dyer of Saint Kitts. Next, they sent Santiago and Yantin to the consolation bracket with a 21-15, 11-21, 15-13 win in 55 minutes.

The victory over Santiago and Yantin was a sweet one for Hughes, who, along with partner Emily Day, fell to the Puerto Rican team in the bronze medal match of the 2011 Pan American Games.

The women’s USA-2 team of Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) and Traci Weamer (Upland, Calif.) won two matches in consolation on Saturday before falling to Revueltas and Virgen, 21-19, 23-21 in 40 minutes to end their tournament.

On the men’s side, the U.S. team of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Steven VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.) won their final pool play match with a 21-19, 21-13 victory in 46 minutes over Guatemala’s Andy Blanco and Erick Garrido. However, the pair fell to the Canada-1 team of Samuel Schachter and Maverick Hatch in the first round of elimination, 18-21, 21-18, 15-10.
