COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 21, 2012) – The USA Beach Junior Tour stopped in Milwaukee, Wis., on June 7 for the Central Open.
The sunny day was perfect for beach volleyball, and drew 52 teams from three USA Volleyball regions to compete in the one-day event hosted at Bradford Beach.
In its fourth year as a stop on the Beach Junior Tour, the Central Open continued to grow and thrive.
“The improvement in play at all levels was very evident as the players competed for bids,” Terry Paulson, tournament director for Badger Region, said. “Being a part of the tour for four years, we continue to see improvements each year in all areas of the game.”
The tournament was broken down into six age divisions: Boys’ 18 and under (18U), Boys’ 14U, Girls’ 18U, Girls’ 16U, Girls’ 14U and Girls’ 12U. The top-four finishers in each age division earned bids to the USA Beach Junior Tour National Championship, which will also be hosted at Bradford Beach July 28-29.
The Boys’ 18U age division was won by Eric Zirzow and Alec Taczala (Wauwatosa, Wis.). In the championship match they defeated Riley Schmidt and Robbie Wais (Pardeeville, Wis.), who claimed second-place accolades.
In the Boys’ 14U age division, Andrew Conley and Evan Greuel (Thiensville, Wis.) took first place. Second place went to Zachary Schumacher and Blake Hassler (Wauwatosa, Wis.)
The Girls’ 18U age division was won by Claire Raddatz and Melissa Morello (Mequon, Wis.). They beat Julia Thompson and Emily Casaletto (Fox River Grove, Ill.) in the championship match. Third place was a tie between the teams of Elizabeth Heidenrich and Sarah Martinelli (Bayside, Wis.) and Stephanie Coates and Marisa Warner.
In the Girls’ 16U age division, third place was a tie between Nina Valaitis and Jessica Johnson along with Megan Skibinski and Josephine Gallagher. First place bragging rights went to Katja Ostojic and Molly Turner, who defeated Savannah Kohlhagen and Sarah Konchan (Racine, Wis.) in the finals.
The Girls’ 14U age division was won by Samantha Sixta and Erin Reysack (Altoona, Iowa). The duo defeated Brook Burling and Caroline Cordes in the championship match. Third place went to Erin Heidenrich and Maddie Kohnke along with Morgan Stecklein and Jenna Phillips (Platteville, Wis.).
In the youngest age division of the tournament, Natalie Nimz and Jordan Murphy (Ringle, Wis.) took first place in 12U. Second-place honors went to Rylie Vaughn and Ieden Sheenan (Hatley, Wis.). Dailey Albino and Tatum Brimacombe (New Berlin, Wis.) shared third place with Lauren Reinke and Olivia Kundronowicz.
