Jul 25 Olympic Games Volleyball Pool Schedules Announced

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 19, 2012) – The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) revealed today the 2012 Olympic Games volleyball (indoor) preliminary round schedules for both the men’s and women’s competitions that will take place July 28 to Aug. 12 at Earls Court in London.

The U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, ranked No. 1 in the world by the FIVB, opens the Olympics against No. 15 Korea on July 28 at noon PT. Team USA meets Brazil, ranked second in the world, on July 30 at 8:45 a.m. PT in a rematch of the 2008 Olympic Games gold-medal match. On the middle day of competition, the Americans meet 2011 FIVB World Cup bronze medalist and fifth-ranked China on Aug. 1 at noon PT. Team USA challenges No. 6 Serbia on Aug. 3 at noon PT before concluding pool play on Aug. 5 against No. 11 Turkey at noon PT.

The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team, the defending Olympic Games champion and currently ranked sixth in the world, starts the competition on July 29 against No. 7 Serbia at 8:45 a.m. PT. The U.S. challenges No. 13 Germany on July 31 at 8:45 a.m. PT. On the middle day of pool play, Team USA meets top-ranked Brazil in a rematch of the 2008 Olympic Games gold medal at noon PT on Aug. 2. The American team faces 2011 FIVB World Cup champion and second-ranked Russia on Aug. 4 at 8:45 a.m. PT before concluding pool play on Aug. 6 against No. 18 Tunisia at noon PT.

During pool play, there are a total of six matches per day broken into three sessions of two matches with women’s and men’s competition alternating days.

The top four teams in each six-team pool advance to the women’s quarterfinal round on Aug. 7 and men’s quarterfinal round on Aug. 8. The top finishing country in each pool will face the fourth-place team from the opposite pool. A drawing of lots will determine crossover quarterfinal matchups for teams finishing second and third.

The women’s semifinal round is scheduled for Aug. 9, while the men’s semifinal round is set for Aug. 10. The women’s medal round matches take place on Aug. 11, followed by the men’s medal round matches on Aug. 12.

The U.S. Women, which are currently in first place of the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix, are seeking its first-ever Olympic Games gold medal. Four years ago Team USA captured the silver medal after falling to Brazil.

The U.S. Men are the defending Olympic Games champion, winning their third Olympic gold medal with a victory over Brazil. Team USA is currently in first place of the FIVB World League Pool C after winning three straight matches in France.
