COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 12, 2012) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh, Jennifer Kessy/April Ross and Nicole Branagh/Tyra Turner are set to compete Wednesday in the main draw of the smart Grand Slam Rome.

The smart Grand Slam Rome, part of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour, began on Tuesday with a women’s country quota match and a qualifier.

Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) defeated U.S. teammates Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Ventura, Calif.), 21-15, 14-21, 15-13 in 46 minutes to advance to the qualifying bracket.

Akers and Hochevar received the No. 6 seed in qualifying. In the first round, they defeated the Mauritius’ No. 27-seeded team of Natacha Rigobert and Elodie Li Yuk Lo 21-10, 21-15 in 30 minutes. They suffered a second-round loss to Switzerland’s Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre (No. 11) 12-21, 13-21 in 29 minutes and did not advance to the Wednesday’s main draw.

May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) along with Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) will begin play in the main draw on Wednesday.

Also compete in the main draw are Branagh (Torrance, Calif.) and Turner (Fort Myers Beach, Fla.). Rome marks the second FIVB event the duo will compete in this season.

The Chase for London Reaches Its Final Leg

As the Chase for London reaches its final leg, the U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) has a 200-point advantage over Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in the race to claim the final men’s slot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.

The first slot is projected to go to Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), who have withdrawn from Rome, but should still be a top-seeded team in London.

Both Gibb/Rosenthal and Fuerbringer/Lucena are set to begin main draw play on Thursday. Joining them in Rome are the U.S teams of Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.)/Billy Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Bradley Keenan (Westminster, Calif.)/John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.).

The men’s tournament is slated to begin on Wednesday with country quota and qualification brackets.
