Womens Beach Teams to Play in Moscow Main Draw

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 7, 2012) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh along with Jennifer Kessy and April Ross are set to begin main draw play at the Moscow Grand Slam on Friday in Russia.

The Moscow Grand Slam is part of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.

Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) received the No. 4 seed at Moscow. The duo will start the tournament with a pool-play match against Finland’s Emilia Nystrom and Erika Nystrom (No. 29). Next, they will take on Brazil’s No. 20-seeded Angela Vieira and Liliane Maestrini.

Kessy and Ross will complete pool play on Saturday against Belgium’s Liesbeth Mouha and Katrien Gielen (No. 13).

The first round of single elimination play will also be played on Saturday.

May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) received the No. 6 seed in the main draw. Their first pool-play match on Friday will pit them against Japan’s Satoko Urata and Takemi Nishibori (No. 27). Next, they will face Germany’s No. 22-seeded team of Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler.

They will conclude pool play on Saturday against the 11th-seeded German team of Sarah Goller and Laura Ludwig.

The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Ventura, Calif.) competed in Thursday’s qualifying round, receiving the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. They were eliminated in the second round, falling to France’s 17th-seeded Deborah Giaoui/Melody, 19-21, 21-11, 7-15 in 44 minutes.

U.S. teammates Angie Akers (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), seeded No. 8, were also knocked out in the qualifier, falling to Japan’s Satoko Urata and Takemi Nishibori 15-21, 18-21 in 39 minutes.

The U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) / Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) / Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) / Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) will begin main draw play on Saturday.

Gibb and Rosenthal are battling Fuerbringer and Lucena for the final U.S. men’s slot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team for beach volleyball.
