COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2012) – The USA Volleyball Beach Department held a two-day athlete summit on Jan. 19-20 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., to help Beach National Team players prepare for the 2012 season.

Fourteen athletes, including several 2012 Olympic hopefuls, took part in the two-day preseason summit, which was the fourth that the USAV Beach Division has organized.

“In past years, the summit was focused on introducing the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) support staff and services to our national team level athletes,” said Brady Compton, USAV technical coordinator for the beach national teams. “Now, the majority of the athletes know what is offered by the USOC and are using the services on a consistent basis.

“The focus of this year’s summit was to provide ‘one-stop shop’ services that address a variety of performance issues in preparation for the Olympic year. Services included orthopedic assessments, blood panels, and skin cancer screenings among others. Perhaps the most important component of the summit was the Olympic Ambassador program, which is a 4-hour course required of every Olympic athlete.”

One particular focus of this year’s summit was consistency of care by the various medical providers that travel to international events with the beach national teams. Dr. Wayne Huber, a chiropractor out of South Dakota, was introduced as the sports medicine program director.

“My main objective was to fully introduce the medical staff to each other and allow interaction between staff and athletes prior to meeting them at an event,” Huber said.

Huber will assign and monitor the medical staff who travel to international events. He has also implemented a series of checklists for each day of the event and is using software to help providers keep track of what has been done for athletes.

Athletes also received health screening and consultations with USOC sport psychologists, nutritionists and strength and conditioning coaches.

“I’ve attended the athlete summit three times now,” said Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.), a member of the beach national team who competes both domestically and internationally with partner Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.). “Some of it is similar (each year), but they are always adding and improving and letting us know what services are available.

“As beach players we are used to doing it all on our own. But being part of the national team and having the training center in Chula Vista and the USOC staff there available to us really helps a lot.”
