COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Feb. 22, 2012) – USA Volleyball’s Beach Division has announced the members of its debut elite development team.

The members of the 2012 team will benefit from services offered by USA Volleyball while continuing to train for future international competitions. Members of the team have their sights set on the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

“The players have all been a part of our program in the past,” said Brady Compton, USAV technical coordinator for beach national teams. “We also had an application process based on event results in 2010 and 2011. And every single one of the players said the Olympics were one of their goals.”

The members of the 2012 USAV Beach women’s development team are Morgan Beck (Coto de Caza, Calif.), Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.), Christal Engle (Puyallup, Wash.), Jess Gysin (Los Gatos, Calif.), Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio), Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas), Kaitlin Sather (Santa Rosa, Calif.), Chelsea Rashoff (Danville, Calif.), Brooke Sweat (Fort Myers, Fla.), and Traci Weamer (Upland, Calif.).

The members of the 2012 USAV Beach men’s development team are Ryan Doherty, (Toms River, N.J.), Avery Drost (Santa Monica, Calif.), Joey Dykstra (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), Andrew Fuller (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Jesse Rambis, (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.), Bill Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) and Stevo VanderWerp (Grand Haven, Mich.).

Players on the development team must play in 15 tournaments per year, sign an affirmation of intent to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games and participate in USA Volleyball beach development initiatives such as camps, clinics and structured workouts and practices.

Jeremy “Troll” Subin and The Yard are helping USAV Beach design athlete programming that integrates strength and conditioning, nutrition and performance education.
