COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 5, 2012) – USA Volleyball has confirmed that 2012 Olympic silver medalists Jennifer Kessy (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) along with the new U.S. men’s team of Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Casey Patterson (Van Nuys, Calif.) will represent the United States at the FIVB World Cup on Jan. 9-13, 2013, in Brazil.
Along with winning the silver medal in London, Kessy and Ross won the gold medal at the final 2012 FIVB World Tour event in October in Thailand. They took bronze at the Rome Grand Slam and finished the 2012 season ranked fourth on the World Tour. Domestically, Kessy and Ross won both AVP tournaments held in 2012 and the NVL tournament held in Baltimore. They finished the season with $106,600 in team winnings.
Gibb finished fifth at the 2012 Olympic Games in London with Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), his partner since 2006. The pair went on to win the 2012 FIVB World Tour Championship thanks to two gold medals, two silver and one bronze on the 2012 Tour. They also won one AVP Tour event and finished 2012 with $152,300 in team earnings.
However Rosenthal split with Gibb at the end of 2012 to compete with Olympic gold medalist Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.). Gibb has since paired up with Patterson, who competed domestically with Ryan Doherty (Toms River, N.J.) in 2012.
Canada’s men’s team of Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton and the women’s team of Liz Maloney and Heather Bansley will also compete in the event, which will offer more than $300,000 in prize money.
U.S. WINS NORCECA POINTS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The United States won both the men’s and women’s points championships on the NORCECA Beach Circuit this season. That is an improvement over 2011 when the women finished second and the men were sixth.
U.S. teams won 14 NORCECA medals in 2012, all either gold or silver.
U.S. athletes who competed in the NORCECA Beach Circuit either qualified at an International Development Qualifier tournament, or were selected from the USAV Beach Elite Development Program, which is overseen by Coach Jeff Conover.
