U.S. Men's Update: Priddy Leads in Turkey

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 4, 2012) – All the news about U.S. men’s volleyball players in the U.S. and around the world.

TURKEY

U.S. outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.), a 2004, ’08 and ’12 Olympian, led his Turkish league team Halkbank Ankara to a 23-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12 victory over Fenerbahce Grundig on Dec. 1. Priddy was his team’s leading scorer with 22 points on 16 attacks (45.7 kill percent, .429 hitting efficiency), three blocks and a match-high three aces. He was also credited with 15 receptions, 67 percent positive.

U.S. setter Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.), a 2008 Olympian, helped Arkas Izmir Spor to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Maliye Milli Piyango S on Dec. 1. Hansen scored five points on two kills, two blocks and one ace. He also set the team to a 55.7 kill percent and a .468 hitting efficiency.

U.S. opposite Brook Billings (Santa Barbara, Calif.), a 2004 Olympian, and Istanbul BBSK fell to Gumushane Torul G, 25-22, 28-30, 25-23, 30-28 on Dec. 2. Billings led all scorers with 23 points on 22 kills and one block.

GERMANY

The Berlin Recycling Volleys, including U.S. outside hitter Scott Touzinsky (St. Louis, Mo.), a 2008 Olympian, and setter Kawika Shoji (Honolulu, Hawaii), defeated the Netzhoppers KW-Bestensee, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 on Dec. 1. Shoji started all three sets and scored three points on two kills and one block. He also set the team to a 51.2 kill percent and a .417 hitting efficiency. Touzinsky started the first two sets and scored one point on an attack. He was credited with 11 receptions, 64 percent positive. To view photos from the match, click here.

POLAND

U.S. middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Jastrzębski Węgiel defeated Effector Kielce, 22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 24-26, 15-13 on Dec. 1. Holmes started all five sets and scored 15 points on nine attacks, four blocks and two aces.

U.S. outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and Asseco Resovia Rzeszów defeated Indykpol AZS Olsztyn, 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 24-26, 15-13 on Dec. 1. Lotman played as a substitute and did not score.

FRANCE

U.S. middle blocker David Smith (Saugus, Calif.), a 2012 Olympian, and his French league team Tours, are now 9-0 after defeating Narbonne Volley, 23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-23 on Dec. 1. Smith started all four sets and scored 10 points on five attacks and a match-high five blocks.

AS Cannes, the French league team of U.S. outside hitter Robert Tarr (Cape Canaveral, Fla.) and middle blocker Matt Rawson (Los Angeles) Nantes Rezé, 19-25, 25-23, 25-23, 20-25, 17-15 on Dec. 1. Tarr started all five sets and scored 15 points on 13 attacks and two blocks. Rawson started the last three sets and scored six points on five kills and one block.

U.S. opposite Carson Clark (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored 13 points as his French league team Montpellier fell to Ajaccio, 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 on Dec. 1. Clark scored on 12 attacks (60.0 kill percent, .550 hitting efficiency) and one ace.

U.S. middle blocker Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Toulouse fell to Sète, 25-16, 22-25, 32-30, 17-25, 15-12 on Dec. 1. Hein started all five sets and scored eight points on five attacks and three blocks.

In France’s B league, AS Orange Nassau, including U.S. libero Dustin Watten (Long Beach, Calif.) and outside hitters Damien Scott (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Eric Vance (Camarillo, Calif.) fell to Alès, 18-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-15 on Dec. 1. Scott started all five sets and scored 13 points on seven attacks and a match-high six blocks. He was also credited with 42 receptions, 64 percent positive. Vance started all five sets and scored 10 points on nine attacks and one block. He was credited with 10 receptions, 60 percent positive. Watten was credited with 11 receptions, 82 percent positive.

RUSSIA

U.S. outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), a 2012 Olympian, led his Russian Super League team Zenit Kazan to a 25-19, 25-21, 26-24 victory over Lokomotiv Kharkov on Dec. 1. Anderson led Kazan with 12 points on 10 kills (50.0 kill percent, .500 hitting efficiency), one block and one ace. He was also credited with 14 receptions, 64 percent positive. PUERTO RICO

The Puerto Rican league completed the regular season last week. U.S. opposite David McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.), a 2008 Olympian, led all scorers with 26 points on Nov. 27, but his Puerto Rican team Patriotas de Lares fell to Leones de Ponce, 23-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-11. McKienzie scored on 23 kills, two blocks and one ace. U.S. outside hitter Tri Bourne (Honolulu, Hawaii) led Ponce with 23 points on 19 attacks, three blocks and one ace. Lares finished the regular season in third place. Ponce finished in eighth.

U.S. opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.) and his team Plataneros de Corozal ended the season with a 25-22, 25-10, 25-21 victory over Nuevos Gigantes de Carolina on Nov. 26. Patak led all scorers with 17 points on a match-high 13 kills, one block and a match-high three aces. U.S. outside hitter Steve Klosterman (Long Beach, Calif.), who plays for Carolina, finished with one point on a kill for his team.

ARGENTINA

U.S. setter Donald Suxho (Korce, Albania), a 2004 and ’12 Olympian, and his Argentina league team Drean Bolívar went 1-1 over the last week. On Dec. 1, Bolívar defeated PSM Voley, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 32-30. Suxho scored three points on three attacks and set his team to a 54.5 kill percent and a .512 hitting efficiency. On Dec. 3, Bolívar fell to UPCN San Juan Voley Club, 26-28, 27-25, 25-15, 25-23. Suxho scored four points on two attack and two blocks and also set the team to a 42.5 kill percent and a .317 hitting efficiency.

ITALY

In Italy’s Serie A league, U.S. middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Copra Elior Piacenza fell to Itas Diatec Trentino, 25-17, 23-25, 25-20, 25-21 on Dec. 2. Holt started all four sets and scored 15 points on nine attacks (69.2 kill percent, .692 hitting efficiency), three blocks and three aces. U.S. outside hitter Futi Tavana (Saipipi, Samoa) is also on the roster for Piacenza, but did not play.

BCC-NEV Castellana Grotte, the team of U.S. outside hitter Jeff Menzel (Santa Barbara, Calif.), defeated Andreoli Latina and U.S. opposite Murphy Troy (St. Louis, Mo.), 26-24, 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 15-8 on Dec. 2. Menzel started the fourth set and scored four points on four attacks (50.0 kill percent, .500 hitting efficiency). Troy started the first and second sets and scored 10 points on nine kills and one ace.

In Italy’s Serie B league, U.S. outside hitter Garrett Muagututia (Oceanside, Calif.) and Sieco Service Ortona fell to Elettrosud Brolo, 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 on Dec. 2. Muagututia finished with 14 points on 13 attacks and one block. He was also credited with 30 receptions, 80 percent positive.

CEV CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

In Pool A, Matt Anderson and Zenit Kazan will host Germany’s VfB Friedrichshafen, including U.S. middle blocker Matt Denmark (Edmond, Okla.), in the next round of pool play on Dec. 5.

In Pool B, the Berlin Recycling Volleys, including Scott Touzinsky and Kawika Shoji, came back from a first set loss to defeat visiting Lokomotiv Novosibirsk of Russia, 15-25, 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 on Dec. 4. Shoji started all four sets and scored three points on two kills and one ace. He set the team to a 50.5 kill percent and a .426 hitting efficiency. Touzinsky started all four sets and scored three points on three attacks. He was also credited with 20 receptions, 60 percent positive. Berlin will play its final Champions League pool play match on Dec. 12 when it visits Jihostroj Ceske Budejovice in Czech Republic.

In Pool C, David Smith and Tours will visit Italy’s Trentino Diatec in the next round on Dec. 5.

In Pool D, U.S. outside hitter Jayson Jablonsky (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and ACH Volley Ljubljana will host Italy’s Lube Banca Marche Macerata on Dec. 5.

In Pool F, visiting Kevin Hansen and Arkas Izmir Spor defeated visiting CAI Teruel of Spain on Dec. 4, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, 25-23. Hansen started all four sets and scored three points on one kill and two blocks. He also set Izmir to a 45.4 kill percent and a .352 hitting efficiency. Izmir will complete pool play on Dec. 12 when it visits Marek Union-Ivkoni Dupnitsa in Bulgaria.

In Pool G, Paul Lotman and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow defeated Romania’s Remat Zalau, 26-24, 26-24, 25-22 on Dec. 4. Lotman played as a substitute and scored one point on a kill. Resovia Rzeszow will complete pool play on Dec. 12 when it hosts Arago de Sete of France.

CEV CUP

In the round of 16, Reid Priddy and Halkbank Ankara will play Russia’s Iskra Odintsovo in the quarterfinals at home on Dec. 5 and away on Dec. 12

Murphy Troy and Andreoli Latina will play Austria’s Posojilnica AICH/DOB in the quarterfinals at home on Dec. 6 and away on Dec. 12.

Max Holt and Italy’s Copra Elior Piacenza will play Estonia’s Selver Tallinn in the round of 16 on Dec. 6.
