U.S. Beach Teams Reach Aruba Semis

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 1, 2012) – Two U.S. beach volleyball teams have advanced to the semifinals of the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Aruba, the final NORCECA event of the 2012 season.
The No. 1 U.S. women’s team of Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) and Summer Ross (San Diego, Calif.) defeated compatriots Kirby Burnham (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), 22-20, 21-12 in the quarterfinals on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s semifinals.
Hunkus and Ross will play Costa Ricans Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro on Sunday. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. PT and may be live streamed at NORCECA.net. Mexicans Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta will play Dariam Acevedo and Tatiana Encarnación of Puerto Rico in the other semifinal.
On the men’s side, the No. 1 U.S. team of Avery Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) advanced to Sunday’s semifinals, where it will play Saint Lucians Julian Bisette and Joseph Clercent. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 a.m. PT and may be live streamed at NORCECA.net.
Luis Adames and German Recio of Dominican Republic will play Mexico’s Juan Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros in the other semifinal.
The men’s and women’s medal matches will also be played Sunday.
Drost and Montgomery completed pool play on Saturday with a hard-fought pool play victory over Costa Rica’s Julio Alvarez and Luis Sandoval, 18-21, 21-13, 18-16 in 1 hour, 2 minutes. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Aruba’s Mitchell Daniel and Eargenell de Cuba, 21-19, 21-17 to advance to Sunday’s semifinal.
The U.S. No. 2 men’s team of Matt Motter (Encinitas, Calif.) and Derek Olson (Eugene, Ore.) won its final pool play match on Saturday over Kyle Browne and Hugh Sealey of Barbados, 21-19, 21-15. But the pair lost in the first round of single-elimination to Adames and Recio, 23-21, 21-16.
For the women, Hunkus and Ross won their final pool play match on Saturday over Trinidad & Tobago’s Shenelle Gordon and La-Teisha Joseph, 21-3, 21-2 in 29 minutes.
Burnham and Robinson won their final pool play match over Acevedo and Encarnación, 21-16, 21-16. In the first round of single-elimination, they beat Dominican Republic’s Diana Peguero and Nairobi Agramonte.
