COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 28, 2012)-– Canada defeated Curacao 25-13, 25-7, 25-22 Tuesday afternoon to improve to 2-0 in Pool B of the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship taking place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Canada concludes pool play on Wednesday against Puerto Rico at 15:00, while Curacao (0-2) looks for its first victory on Wednesday against Guatemala at 11:00.

Canada was led by Jarrid Michael Ireland’s 10 points, while Ryley Brendan Barnes added nine points. Every Canadian except libero Tyler Scott Koslowsky, who had 10 digs and 10 excellent receptions, scored at least one point in the match.

Quinten Anthony tallied 11 points in leading Curacao and Jurcham Meulens contributed seven points.

Canada produced a 7-1 ace advantage and a 7-2 block advantage in the victory. The victors limited their errors to 14 for the match, while Curacao totaled 24 errors.

Canada cruised during the opening set for the 25-13 victory, taking advantage of nine Curacao errors. Canada continued its service pressure in the second set, keeping Curacao out of system in the 25-7 victory. Curacao improved its reception early in the third set to take a 6-4 advantage. Canada regained the lead at 13-12 and went on to the 25-22 victory after Curacao saved three match points.

“I thought Curacao was great at running their combinations and hitting many angles,” Canada head coach David Preston said. “I am happy with our focus on our side of the net. We defended very well today and we had a very good strategic serving match. Puerto Rico is a great team, and we will learn more about them later today. We don’t know a lot about the other teams in this tournament, but I like where our guys are at with our focus heavy on our side of the net.”

“Curacao is a great team, especially in the third set with their combinations,” Canada captain Milan Nikic said. “Curacao didn’t give it to us – it was a battle.”

“Congratulations to Canada,” Curacao head coach Paulina Gilbert said. “Today’s concentration was not so good. Tomorrow we have to pick up our game to qualify for advancement.”

“Canada is a great team,” Curacao captain Raynold Marchena said. “Today’s game was not our normal game – we played very, very bad.”
