Aug 17 Men's Beach Teams Advance in Poland

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 17, 2012) – The U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams competing at the Mazury Orlen Grand Slam in Stare Jablonki, Poland all concluded pool play with 3-0 records and automatically advanced to Saturday's second round of single elimination.

The event is the final grand slam on the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.

On the women’s side, Jen Kessy (Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) along with Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) and Nicole Branagh (Orinda, Calif.) suffered losses in the single-elimination bracket on Friday to end their runs in Poland.

Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded No. 2 in Poland, are coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2012 Olympic Games.

Gibb and Rosenthal closed pool play on Friday with a win over Germany’s 15th-seeded team of Sebastian Fuchs and Eric Koreng, 21-14, 21-15 in 36 minutes. Gibb and Rosenthal’s undefeated pool-play record earned them a bye in the first round of single elimination. They are slated to face the Norwegian team of Iver Andreas Horrem and Geir Eithun (No. 23).

The quarterfinals are also slated for Saturday.

Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Calif.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded No. 4, also competed in London, and went 3-0 in pool play before falling in the first round of single elimination.

They concluded pool play with a win over the Kazakhstani team of Alexey Sidorenko and Alexandr Dyachenko (No. 13), 23-25, 21-19, 16-14 in 1 hour, 15 minutes.

Dalhausser and Rogers received a bye in the first round of single elimination and will face the 19th-seeded Norwegian team of Tarjei Skarlund and Martin Spinnangr on Saturday.

Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), seeded No. 6, won their final pool-play match against Brazil’s 11th-seeded Ricardo Alex Costa Santos and Vitor Goncalves Felipe, 19-21, 21-15, 15-7 in 50 minutes.

Fuerbringer and Lucena automatically advanced to the second round of single elimination on Saturday and will face the Polish team of Bartosz Losiak and Piotr Kantor (No. 21).

On the women’s side, Kessy and Ross, seeded No. 1, are coming off a silver-medal finish at the 2012 Olympic Games. They lost in the gold-medal match to U.S. compatriots Walsh and Mist May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.).

After earning a 3-0 record in pool play, Kessy and Ross earned a bye in the first round of single elimination. In Friday’s second-round contest, they defeated Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Else Baquerizo McMillan (No. 19) ,17-21, 21-16, 15-17.

Kessy and Ross suffered their first loss of the tournament in the quarterfinals to Germany’s Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler, 21-18, 18-21, 15-12 in 50 minutes. They finished their run in Poland in fifth place.

Walsh has paired up with Branagh in Poland as May-Treanor is taking off the rest of the season. After going 3-0 in pool play, the duo received a first-round bye in single elimination.

The fourth-seeded Walsh and Branagh suffered a second-round loss to the Czech Republic’s seventh-seeded Kristyna Kolocova and Marketa Slukova, 21-19, 21-19 in 35 minutes on Saturday. They ended their run in Poland in ninth place.
