LONDON (Aug. 3, 2012) – Following the completion of play on Thursday, the U.S. beach volleyball teams found out their pairings for the first round of elimination play on Friday and Saturday.

  • Sixteen men’s teams and 16 women’s remain following pool play.
  • Jennifer Kessy (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.),  who are 3-0 and seeded No. 4, will play Switzerland’s No. 13 Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr, who are 2-1, at 5 p.m. local time (9 a.m. PT) on Friday.
  • Kessy and Ross are 3-3 against the Swiss team. However the two teams have not played this season.
  • Kuhn and Zumkehr have been playing together since 2009.
  • This is Kuhn’s third Olympic Games. She finished 19th in Beijing with Lea Schwer and 19th in Athens in 2004 with Nicole Schnyder-Benoit.
  • This year, the team won the Rome Grand Slam and finished third at the Gstaad Grand Slam.
  • Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded No. 2, will go up against No. 15 Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo, who qualified via a “lucky loser” match, on Friday at 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. PT). The U.S. team is 2-2 against the Italians.
  • Paolo and Lupo qualified via the “lucky loser” drawing in which teams that didn’t qualify for the first round get their names picked from a random drawing for a final match. The Italian team defeated Joshua Binstock and Martin Reader of Canada, 21-16, 22-20 in 38 minutes in a match played on Thursday night.
  • Paolo and Lupo have never won an FIVB World Tour match. Their best finishes have been a second at the Beijing Grand Slam this year in China and third at the Gstaad Grand Slam in China. In Gstaad, Paolo and Lupo defeated Dalhausser and Rogers, 21-19, 21-18 in 38 minutes. In this year’s grand slam in Klagenfurt, Paolo and Lupo forfeited to Dalhausser and Rogers.
