LONDON (Aug. 2, 2012) – Following the completion of play on Thursday, the U.S. beach volleyball teams found out their pairings for the first round of elimination play on Friday and Saturday.

Sixteen men’s teams and 16 women’s remain following pool play.

All four U.S. beach volleyball teams won their pools. Only Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) lost a match in pool play.

Jennifer Kessy (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.), seeded No. 4, will play Switzerland’s No. 13 Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr at 5 p.m. local time (9 a.m. PT) on Friday. Kessy and Ross are 3-3 against the Swiss team.

Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded No. 2, will go up against No. 15 Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo, who qualified via a “lucky loser” match, on Friday at 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. PT). The U.S. team is 2-2 against the Italians.

No. 3 Misty May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) will face Netherlands’ No. 14 Marleen Van Iersel and Sanne Keizer at 9 p.m. local time (1 p.m. PT) on  Saturday. May-Treanor and Walsh are 2-1 against Van Iersel and Keizer.

No. 4 Gibb and Rosenthal will play Russia’s No. 13 Konstantin Semenov and Sergei Prokopiev on Saturday at 10 p.m. local time (2 p.m. PT). It will be the first meeting between the two teams.

Four sessions will be held Friday with two matches in each (one per gender) for the first half of the round of 16 matches with the balance to be played on Saturday. The sessions are scheduled to start Friday and Saturday at 9 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.
