COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 30, 2012) – The U.S. Men’s National Volleyball Team defeated Argentina, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13 on Sunday in an exhibition played at JSerra High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif.
Both teams are preparing to compete in their confederation Olympic qualifying tournaments. USA Volleyball will host the NORCECA Men’s Continental Olympic Qualifying Tournament on May 7-12 at the Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. For tickets and more information, click here.
The U.S. Men will play a Red vs. Blue intra-squad scrimmage at 7 p.m. on May 4 at the Pyramid. Tickets will only be available at the door and will be $8 for adults and $5 for seniors (60-plus) and youth (4-14).
On Sunday, the U.S. Men led in attacks, 59-54, in blocks, 11-10, and had seven aces to Argentina’s five. Setters Brian Thornton (San Clemente, Calif.) and Kevin Hansen (Newport Beach, Calif.) combined to set the U.S. Men to a 47.2 kill percent and a .344 hitting efficiency. Argentina had a 46.6 kill percent and a .405 hitting efficiency.
Opposite Dave McKienzie (Littleton, Colo.), who started the last three sets, led the U.S. Men with 15 points on 13 attacks (48.1 kill percent, .370 hitting efficiency) and two blocks.
Outside hitter Reid Priddy (Richmond, Va.) and middle blocker Ryan Millar (Alpine, Utah) scored 12 points each. Priddy, who started the first three sets, scored on eight attacks (44.4 kill percent), one block and a match-high three aces. Millar added 11 attacks (84.6 kill percent, .769 hitting efficiency) and one block.
Opposite Gabe Gardner (San Clemente, Calif.), who started the first two sets, scored 10 points on eight attacks and two blocks. Outside hitter Sean Rooney (Wheaton, Ill.), who started the first two sets, scored eight points on six attacks and two blocks.
Outside hitter Matt Anderson (West Seneca, N.Y.), who started the final three sets, scored seven points on six kills and one ace. Middle blocker Russell Holmes (Fountain Valley, Calif.), who started the final two sets, scored seven points on four kills, two blocks and one ace.
Middle blocker David Lee (Alpine, Calif.), outside hitter Paul Lotman (Lakewood, Calif.) and Thornton each scored two points. Lee scored on two kills while Lotman and Thornton each had one block and one ace.
Libero Rich Lambourne (Tustin, Calif.) was credited with 27 receptions, which were 44 percent positive, and seven digs. Anderson had 16 receptions, which were 44 percent excellent.
Argentina’s Federico Pereyra led all scorers with 31 points on a match-high 24 attacks, a match-high five blocks and two aces. Gabriel Arroyo added 10 points on eight kills and two blocks. Argentina did not sent its full squad to California, as half is traveling to Cuba for friendly matches.
U.S. Men’s Head Coach Alan Knipe (Huntington Beach, Calif.) started Priddy and Rooney at outside hitter, Lee and Millar at middle blocker, Thornton at setter, Gardner at opposite and Lambourne at libero.
Anderson started the final three sets at outside hitter. Lotman started the last two sets at outside hitter. McKienzie started the last three sets at opposite. Hansen started the final three sets at setter. Holmes started the last two sets at middle blocker.
Opposite Evan Patak (Pleasanton, Calif.), defensive specialist Riley Salmon (League City, Texas) and middle blocker Max Holt (Cincinnati, Ohio) all played as substitutes.
