Fuerbringer Lucena Unbeaten in Brazil

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 19, 2012) – The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Matt Fuerbringer and Nick Lucena has advanced to the third round of the Brasilia Open in Brazil, the opening event of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.

The top-ranked U.S. men’s team of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and 10th-seeded Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) are playing in the consolation bracket.

In the women’s event, the top-seeded team of Misty May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) finished tied for fifth after falling to Brazil’s No. 2 seeded Larissa França and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva on Thursday.

Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded fourth, opened on Thursday with a 21-19, 21-12 victory in 39 minutes over Steven Grotowski and John Garcia-Thompson of Great Britain. In the second round, the U.S. pair defeated Germany’s 13th-ranked Sebastian Dollinger and Stefan Windscheif, 23-21, 21-14 in 39 minutes.

On Friday, Fuerbringer and Lucena will face Spain’s fifth-seeded Pablo Herrera Allepuz and Adrián Gavira Collado in the third round.

Dalhausser and Rogers breezed through their first-round match against Austria’s 32nd-seeded Thomas Kunert and Lorenz Petutschnig, 21-13, 21-10 in 30 minutes. But the 2008 Olympic champions were upset in the second round by Brazil’s 16th-seeded Moisés Neilton Santos and Vitor Gonçalves Felipe, 18-21, 21-18, 15-9 in 56 minutes.

Dalhausser and Rogers will play Denmark’s 31st-ranked Bo Soderberg and Anders Lund Hoyer in consolation on Friday.

Gibb and Rosenthal are also playing in consolation after losing in the second round. The 2008 Olympians beat Austria’s 23rd-seeded Alexander Huber and Robin Seidl in the first round, 21-15, 21-11 in 32 minutes. But the U.S. team fell in the second round to Germany’s seventh-seeded Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik, 23-21, 16-21, 15-13 in 58 minutes.

Gibb and Rosenthal will play Italy’s ninth-seeded Nicolai Paolo and Daniele Lupo in consolation on Friday.

The U.S. men’s team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who won a country quota match on Tuesday and two qualifying matches on Wednesday, lost both their main draw matches on Thursday and finished tied for 25th.

On the women’s side, May-Treanor and Walsh, who were playing in consolation after a loss on Wednesday, lost Thursday to França and Da Silva, 21-13, 24-26, 15-13 in 50 minutes and finished tied for fifth.
