COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 18, 2012) – The U.S. men’s beach volleyball team of Brad Keenan and John Mayer won two qualifying matches on Wednesday to advance to the main draw of the Brasilia Open in Brazil, the opening event of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.
Meanwhile, the top-seeded team of Misty May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Kerri Walsh (San Jose, Calif.) is the only U.S. women’s duo still playing in the tournament, despite a fourth-round loss on Wednesday.
Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), ranked ninth in qualifying, got a first-round bye and defeated Canada’s 24th-ranked Matt Zbyszewski and Chaim Schalk in the second round, 21-16, 21-17 in 30 minutes.
In the third round, Keenan and Mayer topped Brazil’s 25th-seeded Roberto Pitta and Francisco Felipe Martins Rodrigues, 21-17, 18-21, 15-7 in 49 minutes.
“I’m very happy and excited with these results,” Keenan said in an FIVB press release. “This is our first time in a World Tour event as a team and we got to the main draw after two tough games in the qualifier and that was after having to go through another hard country quota match on Tuesday.
“This is my fourth year in Brazil but for my partner, it is his first time and the sun sometimes hits really hard. But now we will focus on the next matches and enjoy the moment, even if it is just for the moment.”
The men’s main draw begins on Thursday. Along with Keenan and Mayer, the U.S. teams of Phil Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.)/Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.), Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.)/Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah)/Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.) are set to compete.
In the women’s event, May-Treanor and Walsh won their third-round match over Germany’s ninth-seeded Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig, 18-21, 21-14, 15-12 in 53 minutes. However the U.S. team fell in the fourth round to Brazil’s fourth-ranked Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Maria Antonelli, 21-18, 21-17 in 34 minutes.
May-Treanor and Walsh will play Thursday in the consolation bracket, where they will await the winner of the match between Brazil’s No. 2 seeded Larissa França and Juliana Felisberta Da Silva and Netherlands’ 31st-ranked Madelein Meppelink and Sophie van Gestel.
Fifth-seeded Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) lost their third-round match to Brazil’s Antunes and Antonelli, 21-18, 19-21, 15-11 in 50 minutes. In consolation, Kessy and Ross fell to Netherlands’ eighth-ranked Sanne Keizer and Marleen Van Iersel, 21-12, 15-21, 15-10 in 46 minutes. The U.S. pair finish tied for ninth.
