COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (April 17, 2012) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball teams of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh along with Jen Kessy and April Ross have advanced to the third round of the Brasilia Open in Brazil, the opening event of the 2012 FIVB SWATCH World Tour.
The U.S. women’s team of Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) also remains playing in the consolation round.
On the men’s side, the U.S. team of Brad Keenan (Westminster, Calif.) and John Mayer (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) defeated compatriots Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Billy Strickland (Malibu, Calif.) in a country quota match to advance to the qualifying round in Brazil.
May-Treanor (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Walsh (San Jose, Calif.), who are the tournament’s top-seeded team, opened play on Monday by defeating Great Britain’s 32nd-ranked Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns, 21-18, 21-12 in 30 minutes. In the second round, the U.S. team defeated Canada’s 17th-ranked Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney, 22-20, 21-13 in 34 minutes.
“It’s very exciting to start the FIVB SWATCH World Tour with a victory in Brazil and especially in an Olympic Year,” Walsh said in an FIVB press release. “These first games were not perfect for us. We had some not-so-good moments, but also did good moves. But we were exciting. We had a great preseason of training this year, which is really helping us.
"Tomorrow we will have even harder matches and we expect to face Juliana and Larissa again in the final. I love the sun and everything about Brazil.”
On Wednesday, May-Treanor and Walsh will play their third-round match against Germany’s ninth-seeded Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig.
Fifth-seeded Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) won their first-round match on Tuesday over Brazil’s 28th-ranked Maria Clara Salgado and Raquel Pelluci, 21-15, 21-15 in 39 minutes. In the second round, Kessy and Ross topped Greece’s Vicky Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani, ranked 21st, 21-15, 21-17 in 37 minutes.
On Wednesday, Kessy and Ross will face Brazil’s fourth-ranked Talita Da Rocha Antunes and Maria Antonelli.
Fendrick and Hanson, ranked 13th, lost their first-round match to Germany’s 20th-seeded Ilka Semmler and Katrin Holtwick, 24-22, 21-16 in 39 minutes. The U.S. pair came back in consolation to defeat Netherlands’ 29th-seeded Jantine van der Vlist and Merel Mooren, 21-12, 23-21 in 29 minutes.
On Wednesday, Fendrick and Hanson will face Australia’s 19th-ranked Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer.
