HAIFA, Israel (April 3, 2012) – Two U.S. beach volleyball teams are 2-0 after the first day of competition at the 2012 Technion Challenge, an FIVB-sanctioned exhibition tournament in Haifa, Israel on Tuesday.

In the women’s event, the United States’ Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Brooke Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.) beat Germany’s Britta Buthe and Karla Borger, 21-19, 21-17 in the first of the opening day’s eight matches.

Fendrick and Hanson went on to defeat Czech Republic’s Marketa Slukova and Kristyna Kolocova, 21-18, 23-25, 15-13.

On the men’s side, Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) joined Fendrick and Hanson in remaining undefeated with a thrilling 19-21, 21-15, 19-17 win over Brazilians Benjamin Insfran and Alvaro Filho and a 21-9, 18-21, 15-12 triumph over Spain’s Pablo Herrera and Adrian Gavira.

In other women’s matches, Buthe and Borger came back from their loss to defeat Finnish sisters Emilia and Erika Nystrom in three sets, 12-21, 21-16, 15-12 while Belgium’s Liesbeth Mouha and Katrien Gielen were the only other women’s team to finish the day unbeaten, registering a 21-16, 21-17 win over Czech Republic’s Lenka Hajeckova and Hana Klapalova and a 22-24, 21-17, 15-11 win over Swiss duo Anouk Vérge-Dépré and Isabelle Forrer.

Latvians Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins also highlighted the men’s tournament with a 17-21, 21-13, 15-11 win over Germany’s Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik and a 31-29, 21-18 victory over Estonia’s Karl Jaani.

The tournament will continue until Thursday.
