HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. (Sept. 23, 2011) – The top seeds made it through qualifying on Friday at the Hermosa Beach Open, part of the Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series, produced by USA Volleyball and IMG.

On the women’s side, the team of Abra Amwake (San Diego, Calif.) and Kaui Salzman (San Diego, Calif.) had a bye into the main draw, where they will be ranked 25th and play eighth-seeded Jennifer Fopma (Bellflower, Calf.) and Jessica Gysin (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in the first round on Saturday.

The second-seeded qualifying team of Anne McArthur (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Josie Schatz (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had to win one match on Friday, defeating 15th-ranked Nicki Fusco (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Tiffany Rodriguez (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), 21-19, 21-18 in 41 minutes.

McArthur and Schatz said Hermosa is their favorite place to play.

“It has the best sand and the rowdiest fans,” McArthur said.

“For a qualifier, this is a great turnout,” Schatz added. “I think people are dying for volleyball.”

The goal for the weekend is to play as long as possible, McArthur said.

“I want to play as many matches as possible,” she said. “I guess that means winning.”

The pair will be ranked 26th in the main draw and will play seventh-seeded Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) in the first round.

In the men’s bracket, top-seeded qualifiers Mike Maghy (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Ryan Ratelle (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had a longer road to the main draw, having to win two Friday matches.

In the first round, Maghy and Ratelle defeated 32nd-ranked Vince Fierro (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Luis Sandoval (Santa Monica, Calif.), 21-11, 21-16 in 44 minutes. In the second round, the pair beat 16th-seeded Rob deAurora (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Osvaldo Perez (Miami, Fla.), 22-20, 21-10 in 44 minutes.

“We play for the love of the game,” said Maghy, when asked how the team gets motivated for qualifying. “Every match is a fun match.”

The goal for the team, which has been playing together two years, is to make it far into the main draw.

“We want to battle the best teams in the world,” Maghy said.

Maghy and Ratelle will be ranked 25th in the main draw and will play Steven Grotowski (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Matt Olson (Carlsbad, Calif.) in the first round of Saturday’s main draw.

Play will continue on Saturday. The women’s final will be Sunday at 1 p.m. PT followed by the men’s final at 3 p.m. PT live on VERSUS.
