COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 18, 2011) – The U.S. women’s beach volleyball team of Kelly Schumacher and Angela Bryan and the men’s team of Andy McGuire and Avery Drost have reached the semifinals of the NORCECA Beach Circuit event on Rosarita Beach in Baja, Mexico.
Schumacher (Miami Beach, Fla.) and Bryan (Covina, Calif.) will play the Mexico 2 team of Martha Revuelta and Vanessa Virgen in Sunday’s semifinals. McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Drost (Hawthorne, Calif.) will face Mexico’s top men’s team, Aldo Miramontes and Juan Virgen.
McGuire and Drost went 1-1 on Saturday to advance. First they fell to Puerto Rico’s Christopher Underwood and Roberto Rodriguez, 21-18, 21-19. However, in the quarterfinals they came back to defeat Yewddys Perez and German Recio of Dominican Republic, 21-15, 26-24.
Schumacher and Bryan remain undefeated after winning both their matches on Saturday.
First, the U.S. women defeated Puerto Rico’s Yamileska Yantín and Tatiana Encarnación, 17-21, 22-20, 15-11. In the quarterfinals, Schumacher and Bryan topped Lizbeth Sainz and Michelle Alvarez (Mexico 3), 21-10, 21-12.
Semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday.
