CINCINNATI (Sept. 4, 2011) – The second-seeded teams of John Hyden and Sean Scott along with Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson finished first on Sunday at the 2011 U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball at Hahana Beach.

In the men’s championship match, Hyden (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and Scott (Redondo Beach, Calif.) took some revenge against Ty Loomis (Corona Del Mar, Calif.) and Mark Williams (Australia), the team that beat them in the quarterfinals, by defeating them, 21-17, 21-18.

“This feels great,” Scott said after the win. “Ty (Loomis) and Mark (Williams) really took it to us yesterday so we knew we had to step up, serve tougher today. We were able to pull off the win today and I just feel really satisfied right now.”

Hyden added, “I really want to attribute this win to the Cincinnati fans – you guys have been awesome. Even when we lost yesterday you applauded us, our efforts and kept us up. I’ve had a great showing here the last several years and look forward to coming back here.”

Hyden and Scott played their way into the championship game by beating the top-seeded team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in Sunday’s semifinals, 21-15, 18-21, 15-9.

Loomis and Williams defeated fourth-seeded Billy Allen (Venice, Calif.) and Brad Keenan (Santa Ana, Calif.) in the semifinals, 21-7, 26-24.

On the women’s side, Fendrick (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Hanson (Woodland Hills, Calif.), playing in their first domestic tournament of 2011, cruised through the bracket and took down fourth-seeded team of Jenny Kropp (Hawthorne, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.) in the championship, 21-19, 21-17.

On their way to the final, Kropp and Pavlik eliminated the top-seeded women’s duo of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Costa Mesa, Calif.) in the semifinals, 21-19, 16-21, 15-12.

Fendrick and Hanson beat fifth-ranked Brittany Hochevar (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Lisa Rutledge (San Diego) in the semifinals, 21-19, 14-21, 15-10.

“This feels great and it’s nice to win this at home,” Hanson said. “There’s been a great crowd here. My partner (Lauren Fendrick) played unbelievable today and we’re just thankful to be here.”

The winning men’s and women’s teams each earned $22,500.

The tournament is scheduled to broadcast Sunday, Sept. 11 on FSN regional sports networks and their affiliates, nationally scheduled to air at 6 p.m. local time (all markets). Viewers should check their local listings for details.
