COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2011) – Three U.S. men’s beach volleyball teams have advanced to the third round of the Morocco Open, the final men’s event on the FIVB Swatch World Tour 2011.

On Friday, the U.S. team of Matt Fuerbringer (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Nick Lucena (Santa Barbara, Calif.), seeded 11th, will play compatriots Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), ranked 14th, in the third round.

The U.S. team of 23rd-ranked Casey Jennings (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Kevin Wong (Honolulu, Hawaii) will play Netherlands’ 15th-seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil in the third round.

Fuerbringer and Lucena opened play on Thursday in the first round with a 21-13, 21-12 victory in 32 minutes over Italy’s 22nd-ranked Matteo and Paolo Ingrosso. In the second round, Fuerbringer and Lucena topped Germany’s sixth-ranked Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik, 15-21, 21-19, 15-12 in 55 minutes.

Gibb and Rosenthal defeated Norway’s 19th-seeded Tarjei Skarlund and Martin Spinnangr in the first round, 18-21, 21-18, 9-15 in 50 minutes in the first round. In the second round, Gibb and Rosenthal defeated Russia’s 30th-ranked Yury Bogatov and Serguei Prokopiev.

Jennings and Wong defeated Turkey’s 10th-seeded Selçuk Sekerci and Volkan Gogtepe in the first round, 22-20, 21-17 in 38 minutes. In the second round, Jennings and Wong swept China’s seventh-seeded Linyin Xu and Penggen Wu, 21-18, 21-19 in 39 minutes.

It is the first time ever that the FIVB Swatch World Tour stops in Morocco. The north-African country did host three challengers earlier, in Casablanca in 2004, 2005 and 2006. South Africa is the only other African nation who hosted World Tour events – in 1995, 2004 and 2005 in Cape Town and in Durban in 1996.

The $190,000 single-gender Morocco Open is the 14th and final men’s event of the 2011 FIVB Swatch World Tour. The women finish next month with their 16th event in Phuket, Thailand.
